These are a few small "Mom & Pop" type places and a few small chains:

Well, you haven't really been to anywhere universally accepted as good or recommended here besides Surin. Even Nikki's it depends on what you get there. I think there are better meat & 3's in town but it is a birmingham institution so worth stopping by. As others said in this thread, JOhnny's, Irondale Cafe, and even ted's I would say are better top to bottom.

Also, you tried to go to Automatic and Hot n Hot on a friday night without a reservation? . Any reason when they didn't have a table, you didn't try Bettola, Ovenbird, or Blueprint right around there that were also recommended, instead of going to Ruth's Chris?

Come back to us when you try the places in this thread that were recommended by multiple people.

When you've had El Barrio, Gianmarcos, Bottega Cafe, Automatic, Saw's, and Slim's, let us know if you stil feel bad for us.

I'll take a lot of criticism about Bham. There are certainly a lot of areas that could be improved. With that said, not having an excellent food scene certainly isn't one of the problems here.

Feel like the OP might be trolling at this point if the highlights of the food experience here has been Jim n Nick's and BBB.

True. I’ve lived here for 5 years now and that’s what I tell everyone is how underrated the food scene is here

Also, I tried salems diner per a recommendation earlier in this thread and it was very good. The owner Wayne was behind the flat top cooking and the waitress is an elderly lady that calls everyone “baby”

Nothing better than hitting the 6AM TrakShak long run on Saturday and then eating several thousand calories at Salem's.

Joyce was a fixture at a similar long-time Birmingham joint called Bogue's -- that place only lasted 84 years, not sure for how many of those she was there, hah.
Credit to Wayne for bringing her back.

The Ridge in Vestavia
SoHo Social in Homewood

Depending on where you're at it would be a drive but Chubbfathers in Alabaster is one of my favorite spots.

Another recommendation for Nikki's West LINK /

The website say's it's a steak and seafood restaurant, which is a bit misleading. They do serve steak and seafood, but it's a very good classic meat + 3 cafeteria with more vegetable options than usual. There is a wholesale produce market across the street which explains the veggies. The owners are Greek, making the food nicely seasoned.

The neighborhood is mostly abandoned small industry and warehouses overgrown with Johnson grass. While not the most appealing, it fits with the "fading south" vibe. It's only open midday. It's very popular, but the line moves fast.

Four of us were in Birmingham a few hours in Nov. and asked a guide at the 16th street Baptist Church for a lunch recommendation. Very glad that we asked her.
