I am here 3 weeks with wife and will be eating out, picking up food about half the time. Staying in Avondale but willing to travel a bit. What are your go to places for:

Thai
Pho
Seafood
Italian
Pizza
Burgers
Steak house
Chicken except for Hattie B’s. It is criminal what they do to chicken!
BBQ
Greek
Mexican
Etc

Any other restaurants you can think of? We like dives more so than fine dining but not opposed to a nice meal in a nice place.

Not going to go through all this right now, but can offer the following:

Thai: Probably Surin West in Five Points. Haven’t been there recently though.

Seafood: Automatic or Ocean. Haven’t eaten at Ocean in a while. Automatic is outstanding.

Italian: For upscale, Bottega (restaurant and cafe sides) and Gianmarcos.

ETA: Some dive type places to try for lunch: Saws Soul Kitchen, Nikki’s West, Ted’s and Miss Myra’s BBQ.

Freddy's Wine Bar for the nice meal. Won't break the bank, but a good date place.

You didn't mention the iconic Alabama category which is our meat and threes.

Niki's West is a must if you've never been here
Irondale Cafe will be close to you and is the basis of the Fried Green Tomatoes movie
Ted's Steak House is an institution and was my dad's favorite

Honorable mention to some sandwich places:
The Garage

Keep your wits about you in Avondale. While the area is nice and turning around, you are still only a couple of blocks over from some seriously bad places.

Surin is my favorite Thai place but I have tried them all

Automatic seafood or hot & hot fish club

Gianmarcos, bottega or la fresca for Italian

Pizzeria gm or slims for pizza

Perry’s, Helen or little Betty’s for steak. We do have normal chains ie Ruth Chris, Fleming if you want to go the chain steakhouse route. Get the iberico presa at Helen

My favorite bbq is saws but there are a lot of good bbq places in bham

I like the olive branch for greek/med option.

La Paz or el barrio for Mexican

Other places I like are rougaroux, local 39, paramount sports bar, oteys tavern (local bar/grill), blueprint on 3rd, Bettola and ovenbird.

Very true. Some good beer too

I forgot to add a breakfast spot - Demetris in Homewood. It’s a bbq place that is really known for breakfast. I thought their bbq was bad but breakfast is really good there.

It's a Louisiana themed place. My buddy at work is from Lafayette and claims it's legit. I thought it was good.

Yea, as another has said, this location is closing down. They will only be operating the Lane Park (mtn. brook village) location. Which is odd because I think it is far inferior to the Avondale location in quality and I was never in love with the Avondale location.

Salem's is great. That old school dive/diner feel and food matches. Breakfast is very good. Their philly is quite good as well. You can also get their philly omelette and have them wrap it up in a tortilla and throw it on the flattop for a bit. Usually what I end up doing when I go for breakfast instead of lunch. Very tasty. Plus Wayne, the owner, is just a great character.

I'll add another to the list that is in that area, The Battery. Just good overall food, drinks, and atmosphere.

Not joking, El Barrio may have the best steak in town right now. Their Carne Asada is phenomenal and cooked perfectly every time I have it. At $23 or whatever it is, I'm finding it almost impossible to go anywhere else when i'm feeling steak. Don't get me wrong, Helen and Little Betty are legit and fantastic (as is Perry's) and if you want the steakhouse feel by all means check them out. Just don't sleep on that Carne Asada at El Barrio.

Dyron's and Gianmarcos, while not steakhouses, also have a very good steak to add some other options for steak. Both are also just very good.
