Cliff Notes:
Theater comfort/cleanliness: Excellent
Food: Decent
Service: Terrible

My wife and I visited the new Movie Tavern in Baton Rouge for the first time on Sunday. I ordered our tickets to see "Straight Outta Compton" earlier last week and I really like how there is assigned seating so we were able to make sure we had good seats at the time of purchasing our tickets.

We arrived at the theater to find black leather, electric reclining seats that were the most comfortable movie theater seats I have ever sat in. There are small tables that rotate over your lap, with a button that will call your server when you need.

The servers immediately came around and collected our drink orders, and we opted to go for the 2 for $25 (appetizer, 2 entrees, and dessert). The drinks and chips & queso came out quickly. Appetizer was good, but it's kind of hard to mess up cheese dip.

I pushed my button to call for a server, and after about 10 minutes of seeing servers walk around but not coming to us, I turned my button off and tried pressing my wife's. Another 5 minutes or so, finally talk to a server. I ordered the chipotle chicken sliders and wife ordered the mini me burger sliders. I'd guess the food took about 30-45 minutes to be delivered. The tables are only big enough for one plate, and the girl had her hands full with our plates, so I lifted our empty chips & queso plate so she could set down our two entrees. Then she immediately trys to walk off leaving me holding our chip plate with nowhere to put it. I had to get her attention to turn around and come get the plate I was holding. We both enjoyed what we ordered.

Towards the end of the movie, our server delivered our check and I informed him that we ordered the 2 for $25 and never received our dessert. He said he would have to take my check back and add the dessert to it so it would ring up as 2 for $25 and he would bring the dessert. (We had already told him we were getting 2 for $25 when we ordered our app as well as our entrees). Another 15 minutes or so go by, and he returns our check to us and tells us the dessert (some sort of cookies) were going to be ready in just a couple minutes. Another 10-15 minutes, he comes to run our card and still no dessert. Movie ends, theater is empty except for us, brings our card back and says he will be right back with the dessert and will bring it in a to go box. My wife leaves the theater to use the restroom, so I am sitting in there by myself, lights are completely on. A few different servers were starting to clean there areas. Wife gets back from the restroom, still waiting.....

Finally, in comes our server. No dessert, said we could wait in the lobby, it'd be a few minutes and he'd bring it to us. I told him don't worry about it, I've been waiting for this dessert for an hour already and walked out.

It was just some cookies, nothing complicated. If they were out of the cookies that came with the 2 for $25, they could have atleast offered to bring us a different dessert that was ready like slice of cake/pie.

I had him add dessert to our ticket that we were supposed to get, paid for the dessert, and still never received it. Hindsight, I should have just paid the initial ticket and skipped the dessert.

Hopefully service will improve and they are just working out kinks from opening last week.

We have Movie Tavern here in DFW. Never ordered food, only drinks. Always pretty good service.

The food just doesn't look very appetizing, even on the tricked up menu photos.

Hope it does well in BTR.

How does it work? They serve you and interrupt you viewing during the movie?

The places I have been to stop taking orders ~15min before movie start time and have all food/drinks delivered before the previews are done.

There is enough space between the isles where you can comfortably walk down them even with the legs of the recliner kicked out.

As far as I know, the only time they will disrupt you during the movie would be delivering food or taking care of your check, unless you press your button to call them over. Most people ordered all their food before the movie started which is what I will do next time, we had decided to order our food a little bit into the movie.

I didn't really find that the servers disrupted or distracted me from the movie besides when we ordered and received our food which was very brief.

If they have only been open a week then these things will inevitably happen. Not making excuses as it is not acceptable but it happens at the beginning. Definitely give them another chance in a couple months. One thing I can tell you is that training the millenials is difficult. My training regiment at work is top notch but you just can't fix stupid.

This would piss me off to no end. Yeah, I want to hold this empty plate while I watch a movie. It requires a complete lack of common sense to walk away from a customer holding an empty plate.

Between that experience and a menu that sounds pretty boring, I wouldn't be rushing back over there.

As I said above, we don't go for the food. The clientele is what keeps us coming back.

We always have lunch or dinner before the movie. The payoff is in the quality of the seats and the ability to grab a cold one in peace.

Nothing like watching a movie while sitting next to a guy slurping queso off of his fingers.

That's what I'm thinking. Has the gluttony of Americans gotten so bad that we can't go 2 hours in a theater without eating queso and sliders?? What's wrong with popcorn, Hot Tamales and a Coke?

I was there last Thursday for their "grand opening" party. Got an invitation through work somehow and food, drinks, and movie were free, so I went.

I agree with you that the theatre was top notch as far as comfort goes and the food was decent, though I probably would just get drinks the next time I go.

The service was good and a lot of that probably had to do with it being a special event and the servers wanted to impress, you could tell they were pretty nervous.

I never felt the servers interrupted the movie at all either. They were good about ducking and being quick on the few occasions someone would turn on their light for service.

The only one I've been to like this is Canal Place in New Orleans. I don't find the servers all that obtrusive. However, I almost find their attempts to TRY to be unobtrusive, but ducking and running across the aisles, to be a bit more distracting than if they would just walk past me normally, as a waiter.

Nice write up.

If it's like the Alamo Drafthouse, then there's a lot of space between the people sitting next to you. You would have to be a world-class slob to disturb people with your eating.

It is, tons of space between chairs. Plus, you're in a damn movie--it's loud.

I cannot STAND to hear people eat, slurp, crunch, etc and I've never heard a thing.

The whole idea of watching a movie in a theatre while everyone eats and drinks with waiters all over the place sounds terrible.

I felt awkward just reading your little story. Especially the part of you sitting there in a lit up theatre waiting for a measly little dessert while the place is being cleaned and your wife pees.

Your face was probably funny though when they handed you a cookie for dessert, which was probably rubbed on the kitchen floor a few times before being given to you.

Not all of us solely watch comic book movies and the Fast & Furious franchise. I've been to these type of theaters on a few occasions and each time have had to listen to (on several occasions) someone's loud eating/drinking habits. Go watch a dialogue-driven drama and tell me how hearing the fat frick next to you chowing down on a greasy cheeseburger is a fun evening.

I loathe the sounds of chewing/eating. I went to the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin around lunchtime so a lot of people had food but I didn't feel disturbed. We watched Boyhood.

I guess these types of theaters aren't as common everywhere as I thought they were. For what's it's worth (which is little to nothing since it's just my opinion), these are the only types of theaters I will go to now. They are typically cleaner and the clientele generally seems a bit less obnoxious. The food itself is generally mediocre bar-type food, but I rarely get anything other than a drink, popcorn and an occasional order of nachos or quesadillas or something similar.

I've never found the wait staff or fellow theater goers to be disturbing.
