have you been recently? a relative went recently and wasn't happy, however she is the debbi-downer type. i'm taking my mom for her birthday soon and don't want to be let down cause my mom used to love the place.

She will be fine. I take my parents every couple of months and it is as good as ever. It is mostly a fried seafood joint and they aren't trying to be fancy.
My mom loves the fried whole flounder. My dad loves the thin fried catfish. We have had great service every time.
Get there real early or during off hours or you could be in for a long wait. They also have a nice outdoor deck over the lake for dining on weekends.

I went last year around this time. We sat outside on the porch and had the thin fried catfish and it was good! Then we went out to the dock deck/bar and had ponchatoula strawberry daquiris and watched the boats come in. We enjoyed it.

I know Middendorf's is known for their thin fried catfish, but that's my least favorite thing on the menu. It should be called thin fried batter because there's basically no fish in the thin fried version. Other than that, I think they do very good fried seafood even if they're batter is a little under seasoned for my taste.

No question, they know how to fry fish (I always get thin). I wish the coating had a good bit more seasoning, but I always leave satisfied.

It's on YA Tittle's list of five favorite restaurants on the planet.
I love both the thin and thick catfish, depending on my mood. I don't buy into the thin is too thin convention that seems rather prevalent. As mentioned, the soft shells, if on the offering, are also stellar. An under appreciated menu item (at least one I never see mentioned) is the fried whole flounder -- sort of a throwback type dish, they do exceptionally well. (ETA, I see someone mentioned it before me, though.)
Plus, there's just something I love about the whole feel of the place. Lots of good memories. It's a treasure.

Thin fried catfish has been consistent over it's entire history.

I love this place for what it is. I have been taking my Dad here for his birthday for years and always enjoy it. I'm a big fan of the thin fried catfish.

Excellent place, you are not as successful as they are, rebuild numerous times, located in the middle of nowhere if you are overrated.
If you mention any old great restaurant there is always a percentage of people who immediately say 'overrated', you can ignore that. Go and enjoy, I've never had less than a great meal there.
