Wife's in the mood for Mexican. What does the FDB recommend in the red stick?

Aztecas for food. Velvet Cactus if you want margaritas and a great atmosphere.

I'm not a huge fan of any of the "restaurants" so to speak. I generally get my Mexican fix from La Morenita or La Tiendita depending on which side of town I'm on.

As far as the traditional Mexican Restaurants, I find Superior has the best food, but the sky high prices, massive crowds, and loud atmosphere can be a big turn off.

As someone that wants to try every taco truck in Houston with just a few places in BR under his belt, I must say that La Tiendita is better than much of what Houston has to offer. That said, it also isn't remotely close to the good ones here because the good ones are just amazing.

If you're looking for Tex Mex, I can't help because I think all of it pretty much blows and a travesty compared to the real thing. I'm aware people really like it but I just can't get behind the genre at all. there's just too much cheese, bad flour tortillas, sour cream, and not enough Cilantro and Onion...

el Limon on Jones Creek needs to be tossed into this mix. Sometimes there's no employee that speaks English, so brush up on your Spanish and be prepared for a dose of cheesy soap operas on Univision. Before I've been forced to watch Univision, I had no idea human beings were capable of crying that much, but I digress...

Get the lengua tacos (beef tongue) ftw.

My absolute favorite Baton Rouge South of the border restaurant is now closed, which was Montana's Colombian restaurant on Coursey. RIP

That pupusa with zucchini, cheese and some kind of flowers is incredible.

Anyway, this is the winner.

Zipatas on Seigen. Best bean dip in the state and excellent mexican food. I suggest the Arroz Texano.

I don't understand when people say this? Are you saying you only eat at Pollo Loco's and Taqueria Arandas type places? If you've sat at a Mexican place and they give you chips and salsa? you're at a Tex-Mex place. Chips and salsa are a gringo thing in a restaurant setting.

Tex-Mex is just a style of a great food (Mexican). Now you may have had shitty Tex-Mex, but to say the entire style is crap is silly.

I think we get spoiled here in Texas and Houston for Mexican food, so we get a little snooty. Like a Louisiana "Lifer" trying to get gumbo outside of the Motherland.

This is sadly true. I could eat BR Tex-Mex until some friends took us to some excellent places in the Houston area. Now, forget it, it all crap here.

Mestizo's and La Tiendito are better than most, but the rest might as well be a chain, all the menus are the same.

I thought I was pretty clear and fair in that I said it was my opinion that Tex Mex blows. I think Tex Mex blows in 95% of places in Houston(save OG Ninfa's and maybe El Tiempo) and 100% of places in Baton Rouge. I certainly don't think I was being snooty because I also gave credit to La Tiendita to being better or as good as of what you can get here in Houston but not even close to the best places in Houston. La Tiendita serves chips and salsa but much of their menu is not Tex Mex and very much authentic.

To me, there is nothing better than a good Pastor, Barbacoa, Sweetbreads, or Lengua on a good quality corn tortilla with Cilantro and Onion only. Simply put, that isn't even on the menu at many Tex Mex places.

It should also be stated that I think Mexicans are venturing out much further than they have before. As they move away and spread out across the country, then logic would imply that really good, authentic Mexican food, will be increasingly more available in places like BR, NOLA, etc.

We went once and I thought it was pretty horrible. The bean dip tasted like the canned stuff you buy at a Circle K at 2 a.m. on a Sunday.
A friend took his teenage daughter/stepdaughter there for her birthday. He said the margaritas were bad. How do you screw up a margarita? Then his daughter/stepdaughter ordered a shrimp quesadilla and she found shrimp they used for it still had shells on the tail. WTF?
I noticed earlier this week they were advertising on Facebook a buy one lunch, get one free deal. That ain't a good sign.....
