driving home from San Antonio Monday, which one should I hit?
Kreuz, smitty's, black's or Chisholm?

I've been to black's but it's been a while

I really liked Smitty's the best

I sorta did a tasting tour.

split some at Kreuz, Smitty's and got my own order at black, but i was pretty full at that time.

Smitty's i thought had the best brisket.

I'm partial to Kreuz. Hard to beat that jalapeno cheese link.

Smitty's has the best brisket I have ever eaten. Cash only place.

Smittys. We always went to Chisholm when my brother lived there... Cause it was cheap and the line was shorter.

But Tbh, you should just stay on I10 and City Market in Luling.

I'm not in this area often so I don't want to miss out while I have the chance

Smittys....if coming through Houston, I would also suggest stopping at Roegel's bbq, he is putting out some amazing brisket right now

They are all very good. Just my preference but I liked Black's best; Kreuz's was a close 2nd (my wife and children liked it best).

Notes:
- Kreuz has no sauce - none. It's a TX thing.
- The tasting tour is good idea.
- They're in close proximity so you could hit'em all easily.
- City Market in Luling, TX is also worthwhile.
- If your plans take you through Houston, I can also highly recommend Corkscrew (north side of town) in old town Spring, TX (women love that place) and Killeen's in Pearland, TX (south side of town).

ETA: a BBQ tour of the hill country when the bluebonnets and Indian paint brushes are out is a refreshing day.

I'm a big fan of Snow's BBQ in Lexington, TX. They are easily my favorite. That may be a bit out of your way though as Lexington is a hour or so east of Austin.

Black's in Lockhart is always great. I've never had anything less than a really, really good meal there. City Market is great as well. I prefer to go to Black's, but you really can't go wrong with the two.

have fun in Lockhart, great small town.

also, FYI there is a new place in San Marcos called Kent Blacks BBQ. its the son of the Blacks BBQ in Lockhart.

i went a few weeks ago and it was legit. huge beef ribs and great brisket.

Careful if you go to Smitty's. If you go in the back door, don't fall in the fire pit. It is just inside the door yo the right. Yeah, I'm a little clumsy. Luckily I was wearing boots.

unfortunately I woke up to a tragedy Saturday morning and had to drive straight back to Louisiana. I'll catch it next time I go visit my daughter

if you are so inclined tip a glass tonite to Ross Grand, the finest friend and family member a man could ever hope to know. He did what others only talked about, and he will most definitely be missed

I'm assuming you are related. I knew Ross and I did business with JW Grand over the years from id guess starting around late 70's. Ross is a bit older than me. What if I may ask happened? I see nothing online except this post.

He was a great guy and I'll not tip a glass on a Sunday evening but will say a quiet prayer.

thanks...Ross is my cousin
He and his girlfriend were leaving Ocala airport to come home and his engine blew right after take off. He tried to bring the plane back around and a wind gust caught him and flipped the plane

Ross died on impact and Gina is in the hospital in Ocala

appreciate the prayers we will need them

ETA re-reading your post you may be thinking of JW if you worked with them in the 70's, or my dad mike. Ross was JWs son, my age (late 40's)

It's not a Texas thing. When the BBQ is good, no sauce is required. In fact, it's an insult.
