Krogers around Nashville have decent chicken and mammals, but their seafood selection is garbage, but this is a landlocked state, so it figures.

I find the prices between Rouses and Kroger similar. Didn't notice a change in my budget when moving from New Orleans to Nashville.

Rouses major business is not visible to the retail consumer...it's in marine provisioning. So don't worry about them being bought out any time soon.

Well I don't worry too much what other family businesses do. But I do know plenty of big conglomerates throw incredible money to various businesses which would be hard to pass up especially with many family members involved. Whether it is Rouses or not I don't know nor do I care.

I would say if someone like Kroger or Publix were looking for acquisitions Rouses has positioned themselves to be very attractive for top dollar.

Anybody remember where the stores were, or know if any of the buildings are still standing/in use?

There was one on Florida Blvd across from the Texas Club.

Pretty sure there was one on College Drive where Office Depot is today and another on State Street in the same shopping center as Murphy's

The one on college was in Village Square and all of those buildings were demolished. Then Wal Mart and Office Depot built. I believe the only thing left in that area is Coffee Call and it is a different building.

Friend of mine was a manager at that Kroger.

Is my memory right about that College Drive location being an A&P before or after Kroger?

There are 4 grocery stores within 2 miles of me...Pavilions (owned by Safeway), Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and Ralphs (owned by Kroger). I go to Ralphs (Kroger) 90% of the time. I have never been inside an actual Kroger store so I don't know how Ralphs is different but maybe it is.

I don't think so. I'm pretty sure that building was built for Kroger. The A&P's I can think of were Lobdell at Jefferson which is now Goodwood Hardware with a K&B next to it. Government at Acadian in Westmoreland Shopping Center next to Tic Tok, scenic Highway across from Exxon. I believe maybe University Shopping Center and maybe Acadian at Perkins?

Maybe that's what came after Kroger closed...I remember there being a Superfresh (which I think took over A&P stores around BTR) on College and in the University Shopping center on State St., mid-late '80s.

Well the rumor I've heard for years is Publix is heading West along I-10 and coming into Louisiana.

That's a rumor I wish would come true.

And that Publix fried chicken is phenomenal.

I'm familiar with Publix (from years in FL), Rouses (from my time in LA), Krogers (NC and TX - there's also one in Suplhur just north of I-10), and HEB.

My HEB (Fry Rd and Grand Pkwy in Katy) is the best grocery store in the world less the grackles that congregate there in the the evening. A good Rouses (like ours in Slidell off I-10) is a great grocery store and better than the Krogers here in TX.

If Rouses is bought by Krogers, that would be a loss IMO. And if I lived in LA, I would court HEB long before Publix.

I've heard rumblings of this amongst other people in the industry. I could definitely see it happening

We always buy some with other provisions at the Gulf Breeze location on our way into Pensacola Beach. Much of it gets consumed in the vehicle.
