Not for me, I use charcoal on a Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker, but for someone else. They don't smoke food very often, and don't want to deal with charcoal (I know, I tried). Their price range is about $300, and they're interested in this electric smoker.

Masterbuilt 20072115 Bluetooth Smart Digital Electric Smoker, 30-Inch

He's not looking to hit the circuit with it. But will he be able to cook some good bbq with it? Are there any other similar options that are better?

I have a master built 30" sportsman that is a step down from that one. So far used it about 10 times with no issues. The thermometer probe is surprisingly very accurate. This one usually runs around $200.

This one is it.

Well, it's sounds like you had trouble with three of them.

He can get very good smokes out of it if he ditches the chip loader and uses a pellet smoking device called an AMNPS in it to produce the smoke. Masterbuilt will work with you for any issues and has very good customer service if people actually got off their lazy arse and called them.

This is the amnps typically used in a masterbuilt:

However, going with a good pellet smoker is the better way to go. Just as easy and smokes almost on par with a stick burner and better than the ceramic eggs/egg knockoffs.

It's not about the smoker, its about the guy doing the smoking. Granted, the more you spend, the easier it will be. I've been having this brinkmann electric smoker. Cost me about $100 about 8 years ago and is still running strong. I've smoked turkey, ham, brisket, ribs, pork shoulder, duck, chicken, sausage, etc... on it. And my friends will attest that i make some damn fine smoked meat. My favorite is my brisket and pork shoulder. I do the Franklin method. Aaron Franklin has youtube videos where he goes over everything. I usually watch the video pertaining to what i'm doing each time before i smoke something, just as a refresher. The secret to smoking is patience and DON'T OPEN THE LID. Keep that heat constant and resist the urge to peak at your meat. In addition, doing an hour long rest in a small ice chest has dramatically improved the texture, juiciness, and flavor of the meat.

Now if you are looking for a cheap smoker that will do the job, get this. The downside is it doesn't have temp control. It stays around a constant 225 but can get to about 260-270 depending on the wood. Also, if you are going to use an extension cord, invest in a short heavy gauge one to limit the decrease of amps to the smoker.

My next smoker will be the smokey mountain, but i'll always keep this red guy on hand.

Just bought a masterbuilt 40" electric. How does this work? I've used it a couple times and constantly refilling the smoker tube and tray is driving me nuts. Kinda defeats the purpose of an electric.

To OP, we bought the 40" on Amazon for $250. Looks the same as that one, just bigger. All the bells and whistles that one has. I think the 40" is crucial. Makes putting whole briskets on it much easier.

Get the 40 inch. Mine doesn't have Bluetooth but that wasn't a feature I wanted anyway. You can get the 40 inch model for under $300 if you're patient. Electric smokers won't put a deep, picturesque smoke ring in your meat, but I've smoked all sorts of things with great reviews from friends. Mine is 3 years old and I've had no problems while using it probably every other week on average. Protect the heating element by putting some foil on the rack above it while you cook and wrapping it well with plastic bags before you clean the inside. Most complaints people have with these is that the heating element goes out

Just get a Yoder or Rec-Tec Pellet grill. So much more versatile. They can get up to 500 degrees, so you can still do burgers and steaks on them. My Buddy has a rec-tec and he let me use it to do a small whole pig a couple of weeks ago. You set the thermostat, press start, and go on about your day. I literally went home, came back four hours later and basted it, went home again and waited for him to call me when his Bluetooth thermometer hit the right temp.

I have a BGE, and in retrospect, I would have gone with the pettlet cooker if I had to do it again.

It keeps enough pellets in the tray that if you fill it up, it will produce smoke for 11 hours. More than enough smoke for any smoking needs. You use the heating element to keep temp and all the AMNPS does is produce smoke. It will produce the best thin blue smoke the entire smoke if you make sure it gets enough air in the box. No worries of thick crappy white smoke.

Also, since it produces very little heat, you can cold smoke cheese and fish in the masterbuilt.

Here is how it is lit:

This is where some people place it. You got to make sure it gets air or it will go out.

That's pretty involved. Need a torch and a heat gun to get it lit?

Torch by itself works.

I just use it for cold smoking now, I have a different electric smoker that works fine without the AMNPS. I wish I would of gotten a good pellet smoker now though. For Masterbuilt, it beats the hell out of reloading the chip tray all damn night, plus food comes out a hell of a lot better.

I got a torch for this. Now I light my bbq pit with the torch too. it's quick and simply more fun.

there's no easier way to cold smoke whole pork bellies.
