I need a bottle for a gift. Actually any of the Van Winkles will do. And I don't want to spend $2000

pretty much...unless you have a good hookup with a liquor store. Calandro's raffle's off the chance to buy their allotment every year so you could try that route.

That's what I figured. And they sell it to the highest bidder.

There are several more readily available high quality whiskies out there.

Is your heart set on just Pappy, because there's some other really solid bourbons out there that isn't being horded like Pappy?

Hell, I'd even suggesting getting 3-4 higher quality bourbons to package as a "gift basket" type deal at this point.

23-year is hard as hell to find right now and insanely overpriced.

Can't go wrong with Willet

Excellent bourbon.

Eagle Rare is a great value.

Blanton's is another excellent bourbon that doesn't require a an ordeal to find.

I'd also recommend Garrison Bros. if you see it.

Lot of stupidity already here and a lot more to follow, I'm sure. It's not overrated. It's delicious. It's amazing. There's a reason why people hunt for it.

That being said: it's ain't $2k. A bottle of 15 year goes for about $750-800 currently on the gray (fine, black) market. 20 year goes for about a grand, and 23 about 1600. The 15 is enough to blow your socks off, get you a promotion, allow you to have prima nocta, etc.

The Weller and Willet mentioned above is good. Four Roses Small Batch is good and I think the 2015 Limited Edition is the last one they're running if you can find it. Blanton's is always a nice bourbon and has that novelty-type bottle that makes it nice for gift giving IMO.

You might also check out some Ryes if you're looking for something a little different.

Is this gift for someone who knows bourbon, or just someone you want to impress?

It's all supply and demand. Is it a very good bourbon? Sure. Is it worth the 2k it's been driven up to? Not even close. Not with some other qualities bourbons out there on the market for a lot cheaper.
