Review and don't even have an account. I use the app to mainly look at pictures and search for new places. Anyways I was perplexed by a one star rating for the place I went to tonight (after the fact - just walked down Main Street with my daughter after tennis tonight - didn't use yelp.) So I look at this guy's review history and out of like 250 reviews probably close to 200 are rated one star out of five with highly derogatory reviews. The point is I feel sorry for restaurants that have to deal with people like that. Yeah the fish was like a 6.75 on a scale of 1 to 10 but me and my daughter had just finished playing tennis and were sweaty. I was wearing a LSU ballcap for goodness sake. We received excellent service and a good meal. This dude's review included a racist attack on Koreans (I guess they own the place) and a comparison to his favorite sushi restaurant on wilshire blvd. What a fricking douchebag. It would be like winning the lottery to me to meet him and personally tell him what a douchebag he is. Some yelpers suck. End rant.

I like to look at "top restaurants in X city" lists on Yelp and Tripadvisor, but that's about the extent of it.

People don't open up the computer when they have positive things to say unless reviewing restaurants is a hobby of their's. Most of the reviewers on those websites are people who had a bad experience and felt the need to find somewhere to post it.

Same things for apartments, hotels, etc. I've NEVER seen a good review for a hotel I've stayed in.. and they're always great when I stay in them. I stayed in a Waldorf Astoria in Key West which was such a beautiful resort and some of the best hotel service I've ever received, and the reviews online were horrid. People only talk about the bad.

I think it's like any other online review. You find your fair share of internet assholes posting bad reviews and they are usually easy to weed out.

I use Yelp a lot when traveling so I try to go back and post reviews after vacations. Most of them tend to be good reviews. I look at it as returning the favor since other people's pictures and opinions do help me greatly.

Obviously it could be a person with a bad experience or just an arsehole.

I believe many of these online review sites are also used by competition to smear others. Just my .02

What kills me are the reviews of "well the food was very good, but I only give it 2 stars b/c I'm used to fast food prices, and this $9 hamburger is too expensive"

Well you knew how much it was when you looked at the menu and ordered it fatass. Now, if you thought it wasn't good enough to warrant such a price, that's one thing - but these are usually 2-star reviews where the food was great. The fatass just didn't like paying for it.
