Went once after the makeover, pizza was still tasty, service was better.

That's just not a part of town I find myself in all that often, even less when I'm wanting dinner.

I think there was a thread a few days ago about it being closed

I think they're just closed for a couple weeks with a sick family member.

I've been twice since the makeover. Got the margherita pizza both times, first time it took 75mins, second time, 90.

It's a shame, I actually really like it.

Isn't that the same excuse Latte y Miele used before shutting down?

If I remember correctly, Latte y Miele never closed before shutting down.

They just flat out shut down. And it was the death of the owner's father.

Place was always far busier than Mama Della, and were even expanding to a nice dinner menu right before the death and closure.

I went once after the makeover.

Had a magherita pizza. Mediocre at best, imo, and took a long time to come out, somwhere in the vicinity of 30-45 minutes... but I'm no pizza expert. The price of changing toppings is too damn high! If you want to change toppings it's like $4 a topping. Nuts. Old man is too stubborn for his own good. Haven't ever desired to go back.

No offense, but I call BS. Mama Della's margherita is probably the best pizza in Baton Rouge.

Yeah, I don't think anything about it is mediocre. The only way someone can think that is if they just prefer this type of pizza:

Which is fine. I love greasy thin pizza too! But Mama Della pizza is legit.

Take out that was originally supposed to be 30 mins each time.

Irvine had him revamp his menu and he added some new stuff, but he also brought back some of the old stuff that Irvine told him to get rid of. The food has never been the issue; it's always been good and still is the best pizza in town IMO. The problem (which I've never personally encountered) has been with the owner's (Barry) supposed attitude problem. In my visits since the makeover he has stayed in the back preparing the food while other staff members handle the front of the house. He's had plenty of customers when I've been there. I'd be sad to see them closed because that's the most legit pizza in town. I don't see the need to alter toppings on his pizzas (?)... if you want to design your own pizza, do a cyo.

As far as the closure, I believe he did the same thing last year -- Barry went up north for a couple weeks to visit his mother I think.

It's nice that Mamma Dellas has so much business that he can just afford to shut down for a few weeks.

In reality, it is sad that he doesn't have managers or employees that can keep the restaurant going without him for a mere two weeks. I think that speaks to his control issues.

Definitely agree with this.

Definitely agree about his control issues -- from what I've heard, he's not an easy guy to work for. Anyway, it's gotta be either control issues or lack of trust in his employees.

Definitely both. He needs a GM and to let go of some of the stuff that other people can do. There's no reason someone else can't make pizzas for a few weeks to keep the lights on (and employees with a paycheck).
