Heading down to Venice to do some fishing next month.

Can anyone suggest a good seafood restaurant along Highway 23 headed towards Venice?

Also, any good bars to stop in along highway 23 and have some beers on a Friday afternoon? Or should we just head straight to Venice Marina and hang out there?

Thanks for any and all replies

Black Velvet in Buras use to be ok after it was rebuilt, not sure about now... Spent some crazy nights there before though, whole different atmosphere.

I miss Camps....

Spirits Hall at Woodland Plantation would be a nice stop for a drink depending on what time you pass through.

Thanks for the replies. Spirits Hall looks pretty cool we may check that out. We'll probably just head straight to Venice Marina and eat/drink there

Black Velvet was great last few times we went, but it's been atleast a year. great fried seafood. the owner had changed to more of a restaurant than a bar to keep the locals from brawling on the reg

Had lunch there last week. The roast beef poboy was ok, but it was obvious that it had canned gravy poured on top of it. Franco American I believe.

Try the Rallo's Cajun kitchen and subway in port sulphur.

Previously mentioned black velvet.

The food at venice Marina is edible. The management at cypress cove is always changing; I don't know what the food is like now.

They changed after Katrina, rebuilt into a restaurant. Parties and Weddings always spilled over from the Gym to there before Katrina, always had a good time without fighting, but there was a good chance of opposite sex wraslin. Rex Club always seemed like the place to brawl to me.

The restaurant at Venice Marina is better than the restaurant at Cypress Cove IMO. Neither of them are that great though.

I would not go to any of the bars in Venice unless it is one of the marinas.

Went to the Velvet quite a few times back in the day. Never got in any fights there and didn't see a lot of fights. Now every once in a while I would see one down there.

I think I used to see a lot more fights at Sports in Baton Rouge than in Buras. There seemed to be a fight every time I went there.

To the OP: Like everyone said, I would stick to the marinas. You can find food a few places down there but none of them are great. Adam's Grocery, Maw's Sandwich Shop, and the marinas are your only options in Venice really. And the Marina's are your best bet for a sit down meal.

Thanks for the recs. Rallo's looks good for lunch

As for bars we were looking for an early afternoon place possibly on the water to have a few beers on the way to the marina. Not looking to go out at night.

Is Adam's Grocery in Boothville the best place to buy steaks, potatoes, sandwiches, breakfast food etc? Or should we load up in Belle Chase? Thanks

They have Fremin's grocery in Port Sulphur. It's about 25-30 minutes from Venice.

But if you are not in Venice yet, I would recommend buying groceries in Gretna at Rouse's or Winn Dixie. There is not much of a selection down there and prices are also a lot higher.
