I had a conversation with some friends the other day about this, and we decided it was considered a type of seafood.

My wife and I actually asked a priest about the propriety of Turtle Soup. He said he'd get back to us.

The answer was it's seafood, so it's OK to eat.

Turtle is seafood according to the Catholic Church, but you probably should be careful if you're a real hard-liner, because a lot of places will substitute veal in turtle soup, which is clearly not a seafood.

I can understand why you would ask this question. Clearly eating turtle (meat or seafood in nature) would be a much greater sacrifice than the ole turkey sandwich or poor boy.

It is indeed seafood. It just tastes so good, it makes you feel guilty. That's why Catholics get confused. The Lenten-guilt thing is difficult to overcome. It's not you, it's the turtle.

Turtle is technically a vegetable. No problem for Good Friday.

This is verbatim from the insert in the weekly catholic church bulletin:

Abstinence - The Fridays of Lent and Ash Wednesday: Everyone from the 14th birthday is bound to observe the Law of Abstinence by abstaining from meat, including beef, veal, pork or poultry. The consumption of fish, shellfish, and reptiles is permitted. The practice of granting dispensations from the law of Fast and Abstinence is no longer necessary. It is left to the individual's conscience to determine whether there is sufficient reason to excuse himself/herself.

How in the holy frick is turtle considered seafood? If I throw a cow in the water can I eat it? What about manatee? Sounds like people making up rules to suit their beliefs. Oh wait, I just defined Catholicism.
