try xiong's cafe if you get a chance. wife and i love going there for the dumplings and noodles soups. pictured here are some dumplings, dan dan noodles and fried tofu. dipped in chili oil and soy sauce... I know people are generally partial to san dong, but personally, i think this place is superior.

i have a running list here somewhere that i've been meaning to post and to share notes with angler.

Roux Pour was very meh for me. I felt like everything needed seasoning.

We like BB's.

Yep. Roux Pour is pretty legit when you stick to the chargrilled oysters and crab fingers.

Ragin Cajun seems to get the best, big raw oysters in the area.

BBs is pretty good for raw oysters too, and their half and half shrimp and oyster poboy can compete with some of the good ones in Louisiana.

I have yet to find a place in Houston with a truly good gumbo and haven't dared try any of the etoufees.

Oh, and anyone who suggests Pappadeauxs needs a kick to the head.

The Boudin caught my eye, likely will have to give it a try. Probably will try some Oysters too, not many places where I'm at with good oysters. Another appetizer that caught my eye was the sweet bread poboy and foie gras. Always wanted to give foie gras a go.

For the entree I was looking at the duck or the rabbit. I like wild game that I don't get a shot to eat too many times a year.

Will definitely also give the gumbo a run.

Isn't it crazy that a city of 4 million people that is ~2 hours from Cajun country doesn't have a good Cajun restaurant?

This is a bit of a thread hijack but I have theory on Cajun places and why the good(or even open) ones are so few and far between in Texas.

IMHO, when people think good Cajun food, they think old family recipes that are served at gatherings or as some type of social event. The cooking is long and slow and heavy on the fellowship aspect. People are somehow turned off about eating Cajun food with that aspect cut out. Thus, the vast majority of "Cajun" restaurants that I see open are gone in a year because they get no traffic unless they can supplement with generic seafood.

I love Cajun food but can't really prepare it well worth a damn, so I'd love for somebody to figure out how to make work for the outliers like me. I refuse to believe that not enough people think it's good food.

This is my viewpoint as a Texan living in DFW, but I'm curious what other people think.

That's my gf's favorite we were there last night actually. While good, that place is expensive. It's a $100 meal for 2 if you're drinking easily.

If you haven't had one...then you have done yourself a great injustice. It is my absolute favorite thing to eat in this city.
