Galatoire's NOWFE wine dinner - pics

Quick review of the wine dinner at Galatoire's last night.
It was a preset 5 course meal with wine pairings.
The memorable dishes were the pork cheek (my favorite), lamb roulade. Both were top notch. I was surprised by the lack of effort with the eclaire. It felt like they gave up.
Wines were all good. The Nebbiolo, and the 09 Pinot were both killer. We ended up slipping the waiter a 20 to bring us a 2nd bottle of the Nebbiolo.
It was nice having the producer in the house telling stories. He's a mini- Rob Ryan.
All in all, a great night with some great friends!

Looks great. Had a Nebbiolo at Herbsaint in December that was a fine wine.

Looks like you weren't sitting far from me. We enjoyed it as well, though they were a lot stingier with the pours this year. Might of had to do with the fact that my normal waiter was off.

Oh yeah! The major problem with these events is you rarely get anything with any bottle age. However, Galatoire's does so much business with Clenenden (the producer) he wanted to join the dinner and bring some older bottles. When I initially noticed two pinots I was worried as it's usually not my cup of tea but both were much more complex then usual.

No doubt. I was sitting with a table full of regulars who were putting guilt trip every time the waiters came around. Luckily one of my fellow diners is a well known wine guy so we got a slightly heavier pour. Nice event though.

Rob Ryan looks terrible.

I'm a Galitoires fan and I'm sure it was good but that plating looks mediocre. Maybe it is just the pictures but all look like they mailed it in. And I know when you have to plate x amount at the same time but. I love peas but either it is fresh whole peas or smooth purée. Those are a bit lumpy.
That all is splitting hairs though. Love the wines.

it does look pretty mediocre. It looks like they pulled that eclair from Tastee Donuts

I doubt I'd even taste that. Looks like Little Debbie made it. I'd lick most of the other plates.

I prefer whimsical. And this whole board is arbitrary. If not it wouldn't survive.
Oh but "shut up Pawl."
And one or two does look like Otis licked it.

I personally am not sure how much said dinner cost...I also have no clue of the aromatics. What I will say is the plates look boring and bland. Not a single picture I was presented in the list made me go "wow, I need to eat that". It was more like something I could do at home...which is not what I spend money on when going out. Glad you enjoyed it, but I personally would have been disappointed as the menu seemed to lack any sense of creativity. Almost like they took a safe route for their traditional clientele.

Judging purely by the pics I hope.you didn't pay a lot for this. Very meh...only going by pics.

This is such a ripe opportunity to dump on the New Orleans food scene, particular at Galatoire's, and especially for New Orleans Wine & Food Experience, but I won't go there. But I will say that I agree with some of these other a-holes and say the plating looks rushed and amateurish.
With that said, I still would have ate and drank everything placed in front of me. And as you hinted at, going out to eat is more than just about the food, but also about family and friends, the stories, the atmosphere, the waitstaff and all that jazz. It's the total experience that makes a restaurant. And it appears that Galatoire's provided a total experience that was enjoyable.
But seriously, don't get me started on them plates.

It's late so I won't delve too deep. I've never been a Galatoire's fan and am not one today. I have stated on this board many times my disinterest in most of the "grande dame" restaurants in town.
The food was "creative" for that restaurant, but fairly straightforward for what you can find in NOLA.
The bill for last night was high, but I got a freebie. No way I would have paid full freight.
As others have stated, it was a great night just not because of the food.

Pretty certain every restaurant in the country doing a wine dinner says some variation of above.
