Freezing fresh shrimp - why do you remove the head (and are they ruined)?

I got a good deal on some fresh (from NOLA, driven up in a refrigerated truck that day), head-on shrimp up here in OKC and (apparently) mistakenly froze them head-on. I have never needed to freeze fresh shrimp before so I was unaware the heads needed to be removed prior to freezing.

#1. Are they ruined? If it makes a difference, they were vacuum sealed and frozen in a deep freeze the day I bought them.

#2. Can you please educate me as to why you need to remove the heads from shrimp before freezing? The internet is full of people saying you have to remove the heads before freezing but decidedly short on any consistent answer as to why.

I freeze them with the heads on in water all the time and I've never had any issue with them.

You ever seen those little white signs with the red letters outside stores that say "Gulf Shrimp in Store $5.99/lb"? They are all over LA, even at some gas stations. Those are frozen head-on gulf shrimp. I've bought them, ate them, and didn't think they were bad. So I think you're good.

There is more fat in the head. The fat is what goes rancid.

How long have they been frozen? If they don't stink they are fine.

Ok. This makes sense. I'll have to make up an excuse to eat them sooner rather than later then.

And thanks to the other responses for letting me know this isn't completely uncommon. They've only been frozen a month.

I never remove the head when freezing. I simply put them in an old milk jug.

I used some frozen in water head on shrimp for bbq shrimp last month. They'd been frozen for a year. They were delicious.

I always freeze mine headless in Ziploc/Gladloc containers in water.

I normally take the heads off and freeze separate so I can make shrimp stock with them. Either way you are fine.

I have two motivations for freezing shrimp without the heads. The first is they take up less space without the heads. The second is I use the heads to make shrimp stock that I can freeze separately and use when I need it.
