If someone says

"the chocolate fountain at Golden Corral is awesome"
or
"Red Lobster is the best seafood restaurant in Louisiana"

obviously their credibility is suspect.

On the other end of the spectrum when someone says:

"it's garbage BBQ" or "I wouldn't feed it to my dog" etc., do you have the same thoughts about someone's credibility? I know I do.

The only reviews i take into consideration are coments/complaints on service. Food is too subjective.

I pay attention, but when they are too over the top, I assume the poster is just venting, entitled, jerk, or whatever.

Totally agree. If someone says a place that is liked by most is "meh" or "I didn't like it" I just chalk it up to subjectivity.

It's the over the top "garbage" comments that I am talking about.

Heck, I had a Big Mac yesterday for the first time in months and it was heavenly, so I definitely understand subjectivity.

I think you care way too much about this stuff We are on the internet where hyperbole is expected. That is pretty much all it is.

But it can be reviewed objectively.

Leave me alone, Dr. LL.

I get it, and I picture it being a conversation at a bar where one guy says "that food is total garbage."

The other guys say, "ya but you are an idiot. It's not garbage"

And on it goes.

But here, if a person offers up the hyperbole, and someone, say me, challenges them on it, someone else, say you, says
"you care to much....."

Same here. Except mine was a whopper. Fast food definitely gets crapped on, especially on a forum that is food and drink related. Last week was just crazy at the house, and we got one of those coupon samplers in the mail. We had Captain D's, BK, and Krystal last week. That's pretty rare for us. But all of them were delicious.

I don't normally trust internet reviews, but I have a friend or two that has the same taste as I do so I normally trust them with reviews. On the other hand I have a friend who brought a group of friends from around the country who have never been to NOLA and were staying in the Quarter to Walk-Ons to show them "Louisiana food," needless to say I don't trust his opinion on food.

This is partly true to be honest. I definitely do not have the palate of some people I know. I just don't pick out flavors in foods like my SO or some friends I have.

I really put too much on one person's review, especially if it was a one time experience

but I do pay attention to general consensus

Anonymous reviews can be worse than useless, esp if it is obvious that the reviewer is not especially well informed, has no palate, or hasn't eaten widely. But I generally do pay attention to reviews, even to hyperbolic ones. And I've been known to call something garbage (like just yesterday, when i used the word for the Famous Famiglia "pizza" at LaGuardia, a spongy sheet of wonderbreadish dough topped w/fake cheese & too-sweet sauce).

I'm always looking for restaurant info on things like value:quality, inventiveness or tradition, comfort and noise levels, ingredient quality/sourcing, etc. Reviews are a better source of this info than restaurants' self-generated publicity.

It's like buying wine based upon ratings from wine spectator or similar. What if their palate is different from your's.

It's a process and you learn whom to trust after much trial and error. I have a very good friend and never take his restaurant recommendations as I have been misled too many times.

This. If a place has a 4 star rating with 2 reviews, I won't give it much thought. If it has 100+ reviews, I will take it more seriously.

Also, once a place has a larger number of reviews, you can usually start seeing a recurring theme as you scroll through the reviews. Certain dishes keep coming up as favorites or items to avoid.
