I always remember when the first Whataburger opened in Lafayette. At the time it was the only fast food place with a drive thru that stayed opened late. The line would be stretched around the building with folks coming from the McKinley St strip.

Culver's is pretty good considering what it is.
I personally like Mooyah and Smash Burger better than Five Guys and In and Out.

Then you either don't live in New Orleans like is said under your username, you travel and don't like eating good food, or you just don't eat many hamburgers.
The only one of the three places you listed that has locations in Louisiana is Five Guys.
I think the poll is BS anyway. Like I said in my last post two of the top 10 (In-N-Out & Whataburger) combined are in 14 total states. They are both in Texas and Arizona.
So to me, for these two to be on the list the poll would have only taken votes from select states. People who live in Hawaii have never had either place but they do have a Carl's Jr in the mall by the Honolulu airport. The whole northern part of the US probably has never even heard of Whataburger or INO.
The only national chains that could be half-arse accurately voted on are the McDonald's, Burger Kings, Wendy's, Sonics of the world. At least a majority of the people across the country would have had an opportunity to try some of these as opposed to the ones at the top of the poll.

Yeah, there are / will be nearly 240 in Illinois and Wisconsin alone and another 110+ in Michigan and Minnesota.
To their credit, though, it is becoming more widespread. Although mostly in the Midwest, Texas, Florida and Arizona have over 80 locations combined.

Yeah, In-N-Out has a huge cult following and is pretty well known across the country. I would venture to say that it is on the to-do list of most travelers to the state's where they are located.

My point being that if I had only eaten at Sonic my whole life and was given a list of the top 10 to choose from or just asked what my favorite was, I would have to say Sonic since I had never tried a burger from any of the other places or like Culver's and not had even heard of them before.

I agree. Wendy's makes a good hamburger that you need to wear a bib to eat.
Where I live in order of closeness to my house I have:
McDonald's
Burger King
Wendy's
Carl's Jr
Whataburger
Sonic
I go to Sonic, Wendy's and Whataburger most of the time. When I want a change I'll go to Carl's Jr.
The 5 guys is a couple miles further than any of these and not worth it for me to make the drive when I pass places with better burgers to get there.
The best burger in this area is at a Mexican restaurant that makes lousy Mexican food. They don't have a drive-thru or I would probably go there every time I wanted a burger.

I know the locations of In 'N Out, and I am not disagreeing that knowing/eating are different, but you said people in the north "probably" don't know what it is. Having lived in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois my entire life, I can tell you that In 'N Out is a known fast-food chain.

Yeah, I guess I was wrong. I didn't know northerners were so enlightened and interested in keeping up with burger joints.
I live in Texas and if not for this board I would have never heard of or even knew these places existed:
1. Five Guys Burgers and Fries
2. In-N-Out Burger
3. Shake Shack
5. Culver's
9. Smashburger
I have never seen commercials for any of these places. Though I use DVR for pretty much everything I watch so I don't have to do commercials. They have Shake Shack listed and I may have gotten coupons for that place one time but I think it was Steak N Shake, not sure, could be wrong again though. Just looked and Shake Shack only has two locations in Texas, both in Austin, so I wouldn't have heard of it before.
I was incorrect in thinking others would be like me and not keep up with places they don't have access to. I have friends who moved from Louisiana to Missouri and were bummed because there wasn't a Sonic close by. But can't say that I have ever heard anyone I have ever talked to mention any of the five places I listed.
I did just see on the map that Smashburger has a location in the same shopping center as the nearest Whataburger. I hadn't even noticed it. But 3 of the corners at that intersection have Chick-fil-A, Carl's Jr and Whataburger with El Rey next to Chick-fil-A.
