Finest New Whiskey In the World Found Under a Bridge in Texas

Balcones’ arrival was first heralded by its distiller-of-the-year awards in 2012 (from Whisky Magazine and the Craft Distillers’ Association) and then by the single malt’s first-place finish in the 2012 Best in Glass competition, a British contest that names the best whisky released each year. Balcones was the first American distiller to capture the highest honor, defeating such venerable brands as Johnnie Walker, Macallan and Balvenie. The underdog victory was reminiscent of the so-called “Judgment of Paris,” a 1976 blind taste test in which California Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay for the first time defeated a slew of French wineries. Moreover, the win showed that the finest new whiskey in the world doesn’t come from Scotland or Japan or Bourbon County, but from under a bridge in Waco.

Has anyone on the board tasted a Balcones whiskey yet? Thoughts?

Same here. I see them in Spec's when I'm over there but have never pulled the trigger. Pretty pricey and in 375ml bottles if I remember right.
Might have to suck it up and get some though.

How much we talking about? I've never seen it in the bottle.

Their Brimstone Resurrection was named best American whiskey for 2014 by the World Whiskey Awards.

DAMN, that makes it an investment not a purchase on a whim.

Is this a legit award or a "pay for " award? I learned the other day that there are 2 major beer "competitions". One is legit where brews are actually judged. The other is "send us money and get an award"?

Legit. It is run by Whiskey Magazine. The voting panel is well respected. Don't run down to Calandro's or Martin's looking for Brimstone Resurrection though. I believe they bottled less than 1,000 of them. It gone.

I had the true blue corn whisky....quite interesting...it smelled and tasted like tequila! Not my thing so I passed it along...have not tried the others yet.

I have one of the barrels for brewing and have been tempted to pick up a bottle at the store to see where my barrel came from, or rather taste the whiskey that my barrel made.

interesting, the two biggest beer competitions in the US are GABF and the World Beer Cup. Beers are judged at both of these competitions.

Agreed.
Aren't they both just 3 medals/category too?

According to Andrew, GABF is legit. But I don't think it was World Beer Cup is the one he was talking about not being "Accredited" or whatever.

Correct.
Both GABF and the World Beer Cup were founded by Charlie Papazian and the Brewers Association and use BA style guidelines for judging.
