Dog owners: What food do you hide the pill in?

If your dog is bad about taking pills? My best results have been with Natchitoches Mini Meat Pies.
You take a little pie and cut it in half. Insert the pill in the filling and then press the dough back together to reseal the pie.

The dough prevents the dog from smelling the pill (yes they can smell pills). They can't see it. The half of a mini pie is so small they don't bother chewing it so they can't feel the pill in their mouth.

I wrap the pill up in cheese and put it in her mouth and hold her mouth shut until she swallows it. If i don't hold her mouth shut, she'll fish the pill out of her mouth and spit it out and just eat the cheese.

I had to go to just putting it on the back of the tongue and holding his mouth shut. He always managed to find the pill.

if they're small pills, I'll jam it inside a piece of pup-peroni. our dog is allergic to peanuts (along with most other things) so we have to be a bit more careful with her treats and food.

slice of american cheese

dog loves it. i break off a small piece first and throw it to get him in a tizzy.

then i put the pill in the rest of it, fold/smush it and by the time i'm ready to throw it to him he'd eat a kitchen sponge.

"Pill Pockets" which can be purchased at Pet Smart and likely any other pet supply store. Awesome product.

Pocket pills work great. If those are not available to you, peanut butter works just as well, along with canned pumpkin (which is good for their stomach).

Yeah, that's all I use, both dogs will eat their pills no problem wrapped in one of those.

My biggest failure was a scrambled egg. I crushed the pill into 20 pieces and mixed it in the scramble. The dog took 15 minutes to eat the egg separating out the pill bits.

All are good suggestions, but even putting the pill in a pill pocket or peanut butter sometimes doesn't work unless you hold the mouth shut and run the throat which helps bring on the swallowing. Some things work for some animals and some pills and don't work for others. Depends on the animal and the pill.

One of mine I have to either crush them and stir them into the food, or jam it in the back of the throat and hold her mouth shut for over 2 minutes.

The other dog eats them without even having to hide them in food.

Honestly, I've tried everything. Pizza, pot roast, deli meat, cheese, peanut butter, pill pockets, etc. But my dog is a small dog with a small mouth, so she simply eats the real food and spits the pill out.

The only thing that works now is grinding the pill into a powder (just use the flat side of a knife) and mixing it into her food and refusing to feed her again until that bowl is empty (sometimes she eats it all immediately; sometimes it takes 2 days).

She already gets wet food mixed into her dry food, but if you don't already do that, you want to use something wet. They may not devour it right away, but once they're hungry enough, they'll have no choice.

Try the mini meat pies. It worked like a charm:

And you can defrost them as needed.

I guess I lucked out. I just throw that shite into their dog bowl along with the kibble and down the hatch it goes.
