That is true.
I guess coastal erosion would be another big factor. Lots of marsh lost all along the coast. Especially when it comes to St Bernard, the west side of Plaquemines parish (Venice to Myrtle Grove), and a lot of other places.

You got ripped the Hell off. I buy #1s for $4 a piece which I consider to be a little high.

I picked up 8 nice size crabs live at Tony's yesterday for $25. So yes, you got nailed

No way I'd pay that for a crab I can go catch for free

Crabs are expensive for inland shops to sell. Lots of dead loss, especially in this heat.

Jason -- There's a reason why Jimbo's is still in business and you're not .. Just a thought ??

Critiquing another, long time successful business's prices in a category you failed to succeed in makes you a "great" poster ?? OK ..
ETA: I'm guessing you missed Motorboat's spot on explanation two posts above yours ?

I paid that much for #1's if Lafayette a few weeks ago. Seems expensive but thats what they are going for. I think it's got to do with the east coast demand and fewer fisherman. The crabs were thick in the water by Grand Isle last week. I put out 8 traps and caught 2 - 3 dozen med/lg every day.

I'm not sure where this came from. If you would go back and read my posts, most of what I said had to do with the crab industry. I said those prices seemed high but I never attacked Jimbo's once.
As far as failing to succeed in the seafood industry, I worked with my parents in it and helped make it succeed for 15 years (they were in operation for 35 years). We shipped seafood (yellowfin tuna, bluefin tuna, misc gulf fish) all around the country and even some overseas but the industry changed (imports mostly changed it along with some local regulations that made it hard to keep revenues up). Before that 15 years of working with them, I grew up on that seafood dock and spent most of time away from school there.
I also worked at restaurant depot as seafood manager and helped open their New Orleans store. Setup their suppliers, told them what products to carry, sold restaurant owners that I already knew and had the New Orleans store as their #1 seafood department in the southeast region in as little as 4 months where some departments in other cities had been opened up for 5-10+ years. But I decided to leave that job too and get into the oil and gas accounting/finance world (my college degree) and make more money now that I would probably ever make in the seafood world.
As for off the hook, there was some circumstances out of my control there and it was not a total failure in my eyes. The building location was bought mostly for my brother's wholesale business (and to develope my retail) and when he decided to shut that down and go work for someone making more money than he was making (plus he was hit with some huge bad debts from customers that same year), I had to cover all the rent in not an ideal retail location. I also had to deal with the oil spill in the same time frame which I know you have expressed your opinion on in the past. I didn't have the money to bankroll through all of those things and I figured while I'm still young to just shut it down and rebuild my career. The business still did $600k in revenues in the last year I was there. With a better location and a lot more money to back it up, I know it would have succeeded. But that is also the hugest obstacle for restaurant owners (the funding). It costs a ton upfront cash to get a restaurant on its feet and making money.

You were a very good worker and knowledgeable in the seafood industry, just not a good business person .. It happens in every field .. no scourge there .. There are a shite ton of roofers that were extremely good at it that failed when they went into business for themselves .. it happens .. Just don't knock another business's prices .. that is all .. Jimbo's is still in business for a reason, and they have a reason to price crabs the way they do. People buy the crabs on a regular basis from there .. You think they are expensive .. they don't, and the majority of their regular clientele doesn't .. You may very well have been too cheap in your retail pricing .. You're not the first person to go out of business and you will not be the last .. I feel bad for you .. I hate to see anyone have their life's passion taken from them .. I just found it interesting that you would comment on Jimbo's prices in this thread .. Best of luck to you in all of your future endeavors ..

Obviously this is just your opinion.

I'm very aware of this. Crabs are hard to make money off of because of all the dead crabs (which you can't cook). You have to go through your crab inventory every day and sometimes more than once a day to pick out the dead ones. Then the only thing you can do with the dead crabs, is to gumbo them and either hope to sell them or use them in gumbo.

So because I had a seafood retail business in the past, I'm not allowed to ever comment on seafood retail prices? Even though I am a consumer now? I've been out of the seafood retail business for 5 years now.

Your first post was a better troll. That one is just idiotic.

Well .. this one just kind of speaks for itself, without me having to say much more ..

Good to know you were using "fresh" seafood in your gumbo ..

To jump in a thread discussing a current, successful seafood business and disparaging their prices is tacky .. yes ..

What are you going to do for your next trick ?? Suck the owner of Koto's or Showbiz Pizza's weiner ?

I got live blue crabs here in Atlanta for 1.99 a pound a week ago. It was a mix of #1'males and #2 females ... full ones too. Got 2 dozen and I don't think it put me back $25. Really don't remember my exact total, but I remember for a fact they were 1.99 lb., they were from Louisiana, and they were full.

You're a special kind of stupid.

You are obviously trolling. There is nothing wrong with cleaning crabs that just died and using them in your gumbo or freezing them to be used later. Especially if you go through them twice a day.

I think you are reaching on this one. I'm a consumer now just like everyone else that posted in this thread. And I certainly never attacked the place.

I got some here in Nebraska for 5 cents a dozen. All #1 males. Each crab weighed about 2 lbs.

This is one of those problems that occurs when you give your credit card to someone, especially a woman. If they'd have told you $66 for a dozen, you'd have bought some shrimp instead. Somebody else using your money has no such concerns.
That is a ridiculous price, but whatever the market will bear. If people are paying that, they'll continue to charge it. I'd still find it difficult to pay anything for stuff that I can catch myself.
