So last weekend my gf and her friends went to go pickup a dozen and half of live crabs. I was not there but let them have my credit card.

They charged her 101.00 dollars for 18 live crabs

Does that sound remotely right for 18 crabs?

Based on the earlier post of $6.49 per live crab, you got a great deal!

You need to have a talk with your girlfriend. She is spending your money like it grows on trees.

Damn. You can get them in Golden Meadow pricing from $12-$15 a dozen.

If you're in Las Vegas, I'd say that's a good deal.

That's like $65/dozen. That's very high. Were they #1's?

2 years ago Tony's was selling boiled #1s for $35 a dozen.

This is all crazy talk.

Had this discussion the other night. I figured with cheap gas prices crab would be cheaper to get but apparently there are fewer crab being caught this year. I'm sure it is all a way to keep prices super high...

but apparently people are willing to pay $70 for a dozen live crabs...so why not charge it?

Crab landings have been on a steady decline in last 10+ years. I'm not sure if it is due to overfishing, more redfish/fish now, BP spill, or just a mixture of all the factors I mentioned.

I heard they are not catching as many and are also shipping them up the east coast.

My dad works for a company that was shipping them to the east coast. Crabs were so scarce a month or so ago, the east coast was paying premium prices for #1 & 2's mixed (ungraded).

Early in the summer they were catching next to nothing.

more redfish/fish now

Never even thought about this, but it sure makes sense.

I would think there are other factors than just overfishing. They have less fisherman now than they have had in 20+ years. It probably is a big factor though.
