I had my first dinner at Del Porto last night and it was fantastic. I've always heard good things but rarely get across the lake to dine.

Ok, I submit that Del Porto is the most underrated restaurant in LA. It's on the wrong side of the lake and can compete with any Italian restaurant in NOLA. It's better than most. Any opinions on this hidden jewel?

Quick review:
Started with the warm House-Made Mozzarella, confit tomato, pine nuts, white Sicilian anchovy, basil, garlic crostini. We snacked on this while we looked over the menu. Loved the anchovy kick.

Veal Meatballs- nice crispy outside with tender center. Veal jous and polenta were perfect pairing for the rich offering.

Crispy Berkshire Pork Belly & Gulf Shrimp- I was shocked at the size of this app. It was only three very good size shrimp with tons of pork belly, perfectly rendered. It was served with shaved Brussels sprout-mustard slaw, toasted garlic, orange zest, pine nut-currant vinaigrette. Excellent dish.

Split a Caramelized Mushroom, baby spinach, frisée, ricotta salata, mushroom-sherry vinaigrette. It was a nice way to break up the rest of our meal and we were warned that the 1/2 size pasta wasn't very big. Mushrooms were delicious.

Then split these two pasta dishes:
House-MadeSweet Potoato & Ricotta Gnocchi, oxtail ragu, Parmigano Reggiano
and
House-Made Cavatelli, Del Porto fennel sausage, San Marzano tomatoes, broccoli, chili flake, parmesan & pecorino cheese.

Two great dishes, full of flavor, that were both good size for a 1/2 portion. It's tough to be homemade pasta and these were both first rate.

It's fantastic. Best place on the NS. It may be underrated from NOLA peeps, but those who live in the area know it well.

No better Italian place in LA.

I guess I should have stated "underrated" in the sense of how often it is mentioned along with some other highly regarded LA restaurants.

It's certainly well known, but not mentioned as often as it deserves. IMHO.

No. Plenty of snobs rant and rave about this place.

Not on this board. The ease with which you throw snob around makes me sad for you. Sorry you're insecure.

No.

Which Italian places are better in NOLA?

Vincent's, Domenica, etc.

Del Porto has been struggling ever since Ox Lot 9 has opened. Better hurry up and get some of the most 'underrated' food while it lasts.

Hit a little too close to home for you?

EDIT: While Del Porto's food is not terrible, for the quality / portion-size / consistency compared with the price, it leaves much to be sought after.

You pretty much lost me with Vincent's. Del Porto is a much better restaurant. Haven't been in a long time, but would love to go back sometime.

DP is better than Vincent's. Also, I said it can compete with the best in NOLA.

It was a full house last night. I'm sure Ox Lot has peeled away some business, and may prove to be more popular over there. The northshore folks tend to like sparkly things. Ox Lot scratches that itch.

No, I always find it funny when people call others snobs. You use it to slander me, but your usage tells me more about you. Call me a snob, I don't give a shite. Yes, I like good food. This is the Food Board.

I never called you a snob. But, your assumption really shows your insecurities.

Del Porto - White Bean Purée, $14.95 (can of blue runner white beans + CVS olive oil + $0.69 can of black olives + blended together in a Nutri-Bullet)

Hello, Mr. OxLot.

WTF is going on with the FDB these days? It's hysterical.

If you're going to bash them at least be accurate.

Actually from the menu: (no price given)
quote:

White Bean & Lemon-Braised Artichoke Purée, black olives, caper berries, garlic crostini

Not every dish is going to be some great value. I'm pretty sure you could cherry pick any menu in town and ridicule one item as being a bad value.

Vincent's is great. Do people in town really not like this restaurant??

I think Vincent's is still popular, but Del Porto has a more ambitious menu that is better executed. IMO.

I think Vincent's executes their food very, very well. It can appear as though they don't have an ambitious menu, but it's huge so it'd be hard not to find something appealing on there.

No. From what I have had there, I wouldn't be surprised if you had to peel the plastic film off yourself.
