Crawfish Seasoning Mixes - Best Value?

This thread is meant to discusses pre-packaged mixes you can buy at the store and not a DIY thread, which is a good topic, but I may make a separate thread for that.
I know this is a tired thread, but I didn't see one yet this year. Prices change and new brands pop up.
That being said, Slap Ya Mama is probably my favorite as far as taste goes, but it is one of the most expensive. The 4lb bag is what I use on a sack of crawfish, and it is $20! The Zataran's products (pro boil, crab boil, extra spicy, etc) run about $6-8. The Zataran's stuff does the job, but not nearly as good. I usually get a bag or two of Slap Ya Mama and some Zatarans, but I'm thinking about switching to the Louisiana brand, but that has MSG in it...
What, in your opinion, is the best bang for your buck when it comes to seasoning blends for crawfish.

If you boil enough you can buy it by the 50# box at Targil in Opelousas. The Shrimp & Crab Boil is their best blend or you can give them a recipe and they'll make yours for you.
I think it's about $1 a pound
Too much black pepper in SYM

Why do you have a problem with MSG?

Maybe it's the stigma, but I always thought it was supposed to be really bad for you. I just read an article that said it may not be as bad as people once thought, and that the FDA considers it as "generally safe."

I buy a 50 lb box of Louisiana Brand at the start of every season. No idea what it costs. run out to Tony's and get you one.

Yeah I think its more stigma than anything. Fwiw I read the same thing you did.

Chackbay, a box of salt and a small bottle of Zats is under $10 maybe $8.

I said I did, baw!
Unfortunately, it's difficult for me to get these bulk boxes because I don't live in LA. I do visit and could bring it back, but I'm not sure if I'd use it all before it goes bad. I would probably use about 16 lb's a year, since I only do 1 boil a year.

It's similar but comes from an amino acid.
And it's naturally occurring in stuff like tomatoes and potatoes so I never really understood the fear mongering.

quote:Not really if you're talking about flavor. It does have sodium in it, but the flavor doesn't taste salty, it's umami, a savory taste.
it's basically salt

After chairing a crawfish cook-off in for 5 years and learning secrets from 25 -30 team captains, I developed an award-winning blend and put it on the market. its called Geaux Creole seafood boil. It has less salt than most leading brands but you will never miss it. There are 16 different herbs and spices in it compared to about 5 or 6 in the other guys. give it a try. You wont be dissapointed.

I'm going to need a sample before buying a new product on the market.
