Anyone here ever take a cooking class and was it worth your time? There is a place by me offering a class on essential knife skills that I am interested in.

Trying to understand if it is worth my time or if I should just learn from YouTube.

Very few in-person, casual cooking classes are content-dense or technically focused. Most are set up for socialization, hanging out, etc. But I'd call the place and ask--I'm sure the provider could give you an idea of the rigor/content.

YouTube videos and 10 lbs of potatoes, 5 lbs of onions, and a bag of carrots....spend a few mornings chopping, make some mashed potatoes, onion soup, etc. out of the practice.

I have done one. It was a basics class. I had a very good time and would do one again.

But if you are truly just looking for information and technique you probably don't need one.

Is it this one at Louisiana Culinary Institute?

Knife Skills with Proteins

Saturday, November 21, 2015 - 2:30 PM - 5:30 PM
Chef Derrick Beverly, CEC, CEPC, ACE, CDM

This class concentrates on the fabrication of different types of proteins, poultry, beef, and fish. If you are looking for ways to cut your grocery budget, this class can lend you a helping hand. Take home fabricated items, and you are required to bring your own knives.

I know that a lot of people use cooking classes for dates and socializing, so it probably isn't very in-depth, but I'm sure it would be fun and I imagine you can still learn some things.

LL that one is similar to the one I went to, and it was fun.

Picked up a few nuggets, but I didn't go purely for the information.

Follow up question.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good social cooking class to go to in the Lafayette - BR area? Just looking for a place for 2 or 3 couples to go to learn a simple dish and drink a couple glasses of wine?

Both Ruffino's do something like that, but I think they've wrapped up for this calendar year.

There's a free one at Whole Foods tomorrow night. Not sure it's what you're looking for. Lili does some at Red Stick Spice from time to time that are more like what you're talking about.
