Scored some free tix and rooms for the game this week. We are headed down Wednesday afternoon and will stay in college station on Wednesday night and Thursday night.
Any must eat places we should try?

FYI no places are open on thursday. Restaurants, liquor store. You can get beer at gas stations, but liquor is only sold in liquor stores in TX.
-Go to a place called Spec's for liquor on Wed (before 9pm)
-Applebees is only place open on Thanksgiving day for lunch.

wrong...the family and I went 2 years ago and everything near campus was open...lots of restaurants and bars to grab a beer in.

We always eat at Fuego right off campus, Layne's on Wellborn Rd. and J Cody's in Bryan. J Cody's cream corn is amazing. Hullabaloo Diner is pretty good too.

Fuego is great for tacos (especially breakfast)
Go get Kolaches at Kolache Rolfs, I recommend the bacon, jalapeno and cheese.
Dixie Chicken or Chicken Oil Co for Burgers and Beer
Napa Flats for Pizza
Torchys Taco (only have been to the one in Austin)
Freebirds - best burritos out of all the burrito chains.
Looks like a lot of new restaurants have opened since I lived there.

It is and I don't even care. Both are so good. I find it hard to drive through College Station and not stop for Layne's.

was horrible the one time I had it. Tasted like the chicken was battered in what Captain Ds uses to fry their fish in.

For what it's worth, I do believe it was founded years before Cane's was in Baton Rouge

Thanksgiving Day I just tailgate, and have no idea what is open, so if something sounds good I'd check the website before heading over.
Nicer Dining:
Christopher's
Republic Steakhouse
Tacos:
Fuego (I suggest the Dr. Pepper Cowboy)
Torchy's
Burgers:
Koppe Bridge
Dixie Chicken (Koppe burgers are better, but the Chicken is in the mix of all the bars and is a cooler place over all)
Breakfast/Brunch:
Blackwater Draw Brewery
Hullabaloo Diner (Its a ways out, and could be packed, but very good)
Seeing a love and hate comment for Laynes is spot on. Its extremely similar to Canes. The issue is Laynes completely depends on who's cooking that day, so the quality definitely varies with each trip
Hope you enjoy the trip. Holler if you have any more questions.
ETA: BBQ - J. Cody's is good as suggested above, and Fargos ( LINK) is my favorite. Line can get ridiculous with Fargo's as well.

Will the bars around campus be open Thanksgiving day?

Winston, are you okay? That is the stupidest comment on this board (almost) ever. No restaurants are open on a home game weekend? None? You have never ever ever been to Aggieland and you know it. Your credibility is less than zero

They definitely were two years ago. We will be walking there after the game.

I'm partial to the Wellborn one. My brother use to live down the road so that's the one we went to.
I forgot to say Chuys. The food isn't great but the margaritas are great.

To be fair we didn't really venture far from campus and it seemed like a lot of places were closed. The specs 100% was.
Applebee's a mile from the stadium had cars and alcohol so we stopped.

Incredibly lucky you stopped at the only place open. And you ma'am are a high roller to pick applebees. Congrats
