My mom makes this for my little brother every time he comes in town. She uses a box mix, but he eats it up every time. She usually makes him one the day he arrives and then another the day he leaves to take him him.

Looks good but as fancy as a cake from scratch sounds, I prefer a box cake every time. I have yet to have a made from scratch cake that is better than a box cake or nearly as moist. Could also just be that box cakes are what I grew up with so what I still prefer. I also prefer the icing bought in the store.

If you like yellow layers and choc frosting, Piccadilly Cafeteria has a nice, old school version. I know, I was shocked too.

this is my favorite. Only thing that would make it better is bananas between layers instead of icing. That's how my Memaw did it

As I look at your post count, my impression is that you seem to be new here.

So why the hate on me already?

Do you know that I could get banned for posting a cake mix cake recipe photo spread here?

Might as well show a photo of a steak with a pool of ketchup beside it on the plate.

Obviously you were not here for the infamous Vienna Sausage photo post. I still get down votes on my posts for that liquor induced satirical post.

Happy Happy Birthday to you.

Come by the house tonight. There is still cake left, under the cake dome on the sideboard in the dining room. I have vanilla Ice cream too.

The wife puts it there in hopes that I won't get a piece every time I walk by and eat the entire cake in two days.

Seems to work.

What in the heck are you talking about MD? I didn't see any hate. Are you doing some morning drinking?

I'm saying I don't have the guts to post a photo spread of making a box cake recipe.

Drinking?

You my Momma?

My office door is shut...

It's easy to make a scratch cake taste like a boxed one: use cooking oil instead of butter and imitation vanillla instead of real vanilla extract. Voila, a bouncy crumb like Duncan Hines and the fakey box flavor.

MD did take that a bit personally.

Dude's got one of the more peculiar cases of thin-skinnedness I've seen on this site.

I like him as a poster, I really do, but man oh man.

Mom always made hers as a sheet cake which was fine with me. She alternated between yellow cake/choc icing and Choc cake/white icing and brownies.
