In Baton Rouge for the night and looking for a bite to eat. I've seen chimes mentioned on here quite a bit so I was going to give it a try but I passed by City Pork earlier and thought I might try that instead. What does the F&D board recommend?

Smoked meat - City Pork
Fried seafood - Chimes

Really depends on what you want to eat, and how many different beers you want to try

Depends what type of food you want.

Chimes-fried seafood, oysters, wings, burgers, red beans, gumbo, beer.

City Pork-pork dishes and meat and cheese plate.

Both are good but I find Chimes has more variety and better atmosphere to have a meal and some beer. Don't get me wrong, City Pork does some great dishes and you can't go wrong there either but it feels like the Bocage neighborhood got dumped in there every time we go.

City Pork is very, very good. But The Chimes is a local institution. And it has a great beer selection and a better variety of food.

The special at the brasserie looked FIRE tonight

But I would probably choose chimes because that place just makes me happy

I don't know how else to succinctly describe it, and differentiate it from fried seafood, which Chimes has on lock down.

Chimes - fried seafood
City Pork - delicately prepared meats and cheeses, with various accoutrement, country flavors with city flair.

Doesn't quite roll off the fingertips as well

Chimes. I like beer, so that helps, but city pork was just OK to me the two times I went. It was good, but I guess I was hoping for/expecting better. I also expected a more classic BBQ menu, but it has an interesting Asian twist that I wasn't expecting or wanting at the time.

Chimes is great but if I walked out my door right now to eat the rabbit dumplings at City Pork would be my first choice.

For being such a great place, City Pork has a weak beer selection.

Love the dumplings btw.

there is only one place to go "around the world". everything else is normal. i've only been at lunch, so not drinking, but City Pork has several taps and many different bottles. not every restaurant needs to have 165 European beers. that's called a bar.

I like The Chimes, but I don't like it nearly as much as most people on this board seem to. Then again, I'm not a big drinker so that's understandable. I'm a big fan of all 3 CP locations, and Parrains.

The City Pork Deli and Charcuterie has a very decent beer selection. I think their beer selection is at least on par with the Merchant, which some give compliments for their beer selection. Not sure about other locations.

When people here complain about lack of good beer, I don't think this is what they mean. I always found it odd that a place like City Pork doesn't carry Envie, Juke Joint, etc. The only Parish beer they carry is Canebrake (misspelled on their menu), and Parish is huge right now. Zero Great Raft beers.

I don't expect every restaurant to carry odd beers, but to not get the top-rated local crafts seems lazy.

I love CP, by the way.

Had one Tuesday at the overpass location. Granted it was a bottle and not on tap, but they still had it.

Never been to the other location, but I wish the overpass one had a good tap selection.
