Dear Friends,

On June 25, one of our customers posted on social media about treatment she received at our Mid-City store. We have investigated this incident, taken employee statements, watched security camera footage, and have now concluded that there is no excuse for how we handled this incident. We have apologized directly to that customer, and we are apologizing now to the entire Baton Rouge community. The way our organization - staff and management - responded does not reflect our values. We especially treasure the diversity of the Mid-City community, and we want all our customers to feel welcome. We have addressed this incident with our staff and we have already begun making changes to ensure that nothing like this ever occurs again.

I personally appreciate this customer, along with others in our community, for bringing this to our attention because it gives us a chance to rectify it with her and to take a serious look at ourselves and determine where we need to improve. One of the things that we have learned from being in business for 76 years is that there is always something to learn. We pledge that we are redoubling our efforts to ensure that every Calandro’s customer is treated with the utmost dignity and respect. We are excited about the changes that are occurring in Mid-City and we pride ourselves in being a part of those changes in all the best ways.

Sincerely,

Blaise Calandro, Jr.

President/CEO/Owner
Calandro's Supermarket

Will you allow people of color to work as cashiers?

quote:

Allowing food stamps would convince me that you really share my values and want customers to feel welcome.

quote:

Well said but it is late, Not fatally late. I will give y'all another chance. Accepting EBT cards would go a long way to show that you do respect the entire community

quote:

Thank you for addressing these concerns. I am curious, were cashiers encouraged to remind customers like me that you don't accept food stamps or do they take it upon themselves to point this out? I enjoyed shopping with you years ago, but a safe environment is important to me. Please know I have an open mind and will be listening.

quote:

Or if you don't accept EBT, tell us why not?
quote:

Really want to know the answer to this one before I can shop there again. I live two blocks from your mid city location. Happy to travel further for overpriced, mediocre produce if this isn't answered. Were any of the employees involved terminated or punished? We need more info. This kind of half way apology just keeps the story going and makes people angrier. With good cause.

quote:

When you say you are committed to treating every customer with dignity and respect do you also include customers on food stamps?

I live a couple of blocks away from a Calandros. I want to support you. I want to be excited about your store, but I always feel uncomfortable shopping there. Knowing that if I was poor, I wouldn't be welcomed doesn't feel right to me.

Let's be frank, the stereotype is that black people are on food stamps (we know that the majority of food stamp recipients are white). Not accepting food stamps is a not so subtle cue to your employees that black people aren't welcomed at your store.

Do you plan to address these systemic ways Calandros discriminates/excludes, or do you merely plan to address grievances individual by individual?

I don't mean to sound flippant or hyperbolic. I want to do my shopping exclusively at a local store. I want to support you. But until I know that I'd be just as welcome if I was black, I'm not going to be able to.

quote:

Why don't you mention racism in your statement?

Apparently someone was threatened?

Let me know when lsucdro puts the store's rare beer allotment up for sale online again. If he's taking EBT now, I might be able to get my hands on some Cantillon after all.

I see this as they will only shop there if they get free stuff.

There is no reason to treat customers like shite, but I dont see the big deal when people who don't shop there threaten to take their business elsewhere.

They've made so many bad reviews Calandros is rated 2.6/5 (not that it means much, just found it funny)

Calandro's will lose plenty of customers if they start to accept EBT. The reason people pay higher prices, is because they don't want to deal with the riff raff at Walmart/WinnDixie et al. I don't have work that brings me to BR much anymore, but when I was there, Calandros was always the nicer option.

Btw, if it's an EBT issue that the "customer" was complaining about...then they were never a customer.

Also, STOP kowtowing to SJWs/BLM. Frick em all

It's a big nothing burger.. Someone was shopping in Calandro's with a Trader Joe's bag and there was some confusion in the store..

Don't think it has anything to do with EBT and it looks like Calandro's addressed it.

She's been spearheading the campaign to destroy Calandro's since she found out about this incident. It's basically her new career.

Yea, I'm really confused about this. I read the original post about the Trader Joe's bag / theft accusation. I never heard anything about EBT acceptance.

Are the SJaws just using an inconsequential incident to rally around?

BTW, I support not accepting EBT. I wouldn't want to sign on to any state program involving my finances.

There was another post about Calandros not accepting EBT as a form of racism. Apparently only black people are using EBT cards.

I've heard it is a pain to deal with and much more involved than say just standard credit or debit cards. And I agree if I'm in the business and in a position financially to not do it I would simply because you just have another government agency looking at your numbers which shouldn't be any of their business.

But someone could have gone in and cleaned up the beer section and they got mad. It always looks like a train wreck and the people running it are always just shooting the shite with random people.

This is my favorite part of the argument. They're essentially saying that only black people are on welfare yet are completely oblivious to it. Soft bigotry is their bread and butter.

Funny is it is all white people as well. Like 2 of those comments come from a person of color.

Would be funny if Calandros decided to shut down the location and move to an upcoming area with more money. Then they would really be in an uproar.

this is such BS.

Go down to Albs if you need to use your EBT. Or perhaps get a job so you dont have to rely on EBT.

this shite is getting out of hand

People who are not even from La giving 1 star reviews...

I've seen this on other pages and it is always funny.

honestly, the 1 star reviews wont affect them at all. Its a grocery store. Your options is Calandro's or Albs. You want better product, then your going to Calandro's. This should blow over quickly once the SJWs find a new topic to sink their teeth in

someone should counter this with a bunch of 5 star reviews saying they love shopping their because it's not like Harlem inside the store.
