I consider a descriptive explanation to be a substantive review while using Beer Advocate.

Doesn't really provide a lot of direction or feedback if a brewer sees it and wants to make changes. It's not hard to drop a few words that provide a pointed explanation for why you gave it the rating you did.
More importantly, at least for me, it provides a quick reference when I look up a beer I've had before. If I didn't like it, I now know precisely why and I can order more efficiently.
That's just me, though.

Agreed. I check untappd for a star rating when I am already at the store.
When I finally doing a little research, I'll have on BA and read more descriptive reviews
