Yeah, I was in Carson, WA on a camping trip last summer (right there on the Columbia Gorge - not Oregon, but it might as well be), and that town doesn't have a stop light, but I saw two breweries...

Greater Houston

Karbach - Regular lineup and seasonals are decent but FUN series and BBH takes them to the top in my book
Saint Arnold - mainly because of their BB and DR series. Their normal lineups are pretty meh
Lone Pint - yellow rose alone brings them up to #3 or #4
Buffalo Bayou - small but lots of creative options going on. Some of it is hit or miss but at least they arent putting out the same ole stuff as everyone else
8th Wonder - Rocket Fuel gets them above the rest
Southern Star - Buried Hatchet and Black Crack are good
Texian - haven't had much, but their Saison wasn't terrible
No Label - I've been very underwhelmed with what I've had
For Bend - not sure if I've even had any of their beers but it wasn't memorable if so

Running Monk (except the brewpub is freezing, and the tour hours are odd)

Obviously it wouldn't be, but I'm living in fantasy land over here. I'm talking like winning the mega millions power ball where I have more money than I do what to do with and can take my time to get it right without having to worry about money coming in.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head for Houston.

A couple more in the works too.

According to the San Francisco Brewers Guild there are 20 breweries in the city--some of which I haven't tried yet.

I would place the following in the top tier of SF Breweries:

Cellarmaker
Almanac
Magnolia
21A
Anchor

Beyond that its a mixed bag and ones I haven't tried. The closest to me (Social Brewery) is average and since its only 5 blocks away, I really should go more often.

The one I haven't gone to yet that I'm most interested in is Barrel Head Brewhouse

quote:

We work on a shiny new 15 barrel Prospero brewhouse, with two 15 barrel fermenters and three 15 bbl bright tanks. Our array of awesome guest beers allows us to brew whatever we are inspired to make on any given brew day. We enjoy experimentation and also trying to nail classic styles. We like to keep our regulars on their toes by constantly brewing new innovative beers encompassing the spectrum of malty, hoppy, and weird. We use the highest quality ingredients and never rush the fermentation. Oh, and we dry-hop pretty much everything. So far we have brewed a Saison, Black Kolsch, IPA, Roggenbier, Colonial Porter, Wet Hop Pale Ale, Hefeweizen, and have a Double IPA, Imperial Red Ale, Framboise, and Oktoberfest on deck.

Ranking the breweries in Portland is tough. I guess it just depends on what you want. I'll give a rough top 10.

Different styles makes for apples to oranges comparisons.

Cascade - great sours. Clearly the best in that category.
Hair of the Dog - Some fantastic barrel aged beers. Again, gets points because of the uniqueness of their beers.
Deschutes - Best brewpub. So busy, nobody goes there anymore. Very good standard lineup, but one-offs and seasonals are great.
Breakside - Very good beers, and always coming up with interesting one-offs
Laurelwood - Like Breakside, but there IPAs run more to the piney side.
The Commons - On the list because they brew a lot of non-standard beers that are very tasty. They brew more farmhouse style beers.
Upright - Similar to The Commons, Belgian beers, very tasty.
Hopworks Urban Brewery - Everything they brew is really good. Their Brewpubs are very cool, also.
McMenamins - Great place to hang out. They restore old buildings and make brew pubs. Consistency is a problem, as they brew on site at all of their brewpubs, of which there are many.
Fat Heads - New to the scene here in Portland. They have a lot of guest taps in addition to their regular lineup.
