A very good friend of mine who knows their business very well told me BrewBacher's on Nicholson is closing due to leasing issues, upcoming road work, market saturation and that location is very seasonal.

How many restaurants have come and gone since the first BrewBacher's opened?
I'd say they have had a pretty good run.
And the location on Bluebonnet still prints money.

Any idea how long that location was open?

The article I linked from The Advocate said over 30 years.

Agreed. This news will disappoint those of us who enjoyed Brewbachers in the 80s and 90s. Surely the market has changed in that area, and maybe they didn't change their menu enough over time. Some old establishments like George's didn't ever change their menu much, if at all, and people patronize them for that unchanging constant bit of goodness. Maybe Brewbachers tried to do the same in a more dynamic (aka: fickle) part of town, and got over-run with new competition.

I think George's a bit more of staple than Brewbachers. But i could be wrong.

I dont know. They did have a very good run. That location was awesome for years. Its still a good location but some of these reasons ring a different bell for me
leasing issues-rent going up
upcoming road work-if so, youve been there 30 years, why not deal with a road work project if its going to help the traffic flow in the area for the future
market saturation-competition
very seasonal location-see above. theyve been there 30 years thriving on the location by a university of 20-30k people.
it was a good place to go have a beer and a sandwich after class. now there is just too many other options nearby.

We could use a cheaper burger place like that near campus.
Barcadia, Chimes, Fat Cow & Walk Ons fit that bill.
None of them are cheap.
Louis and Raul's fit the bill though.

What are they doing to Nicholson construction wise? Hadn't been that way in years. And Raul's didn't wow me ..

grew up in Lakeside right down the road from this one and can remember when that place was pretty much the only restaurant on that stretch of BB
That and the first Deangelo's where the mexican place is now

Is Voo Doo BBQ still over there
It is. When I bring my daughter to swim practice I go over there and have a couple of beers while I'm waiting.
There is NEVER more than 2-3 tables seated between 5-730 pm.
Unless they kick arse at lunch, I don't seem them staying open.
$1.50 draft ain't a bad deal, tho! Even for BMC

Great cornbread. Wish they'd come back to Boutin's location
Posted on 5/7/15 at 10:04 am to Y.A. Tittle
that was always a boutin's or Mulatte's to me
also, maybe I was a kid and just didn't know any better but I always thought the Sicily's on BB had good pizza. Not to be confused with the sicily's buffet place that opened years later on siegen, they sucked.

Supposedly, they are finally widening the intersection with Lee to accommodate left turn lanes. However, I saw something else that says they are actually widening Nicholson to 4 lanes all the way to Lee and getting all of the right of ways ready so that in the future they can 4-lane it further to Gardere and Bluebonnet. Those intersections were already built to accommodate 30 being 4 lanes wide.

I still can't believe the one in Drusilla is still open.
I never see anyone in there.

to the old Brewbachers
Brewbachers was successful there because they had a captive market. Their food was always mediocre, and they priced it higher than it should have been, but just low enough for college students to afford. This gave them very comfortable margins and decades of success when they were one of only two restaurants in that part of campus. Times have changed.
There are now far more options in that area that cost less and consistently produce better food. Brewbacher's burgers are bland, and their po'boys are a joke portion wise. Students can now get a better burger at a dozen places near LSU, 2 of which are on the south side (Akasha & Fat Cow). Better po'boys can be found one block away at Brightside & even at Walk On's (which is saying something). How were they going to differentiate themselves from the competition? Where were they better? The were not winning on price, they were losing big time on quality, getting killed in portions, and started lagging in service. Their beer selection was nothing spectacular and they weren't competing favorably as just a "bar". They simply didn't fit with what the area had become.
They were still profitable, but prolonged road construction would likely eliminate their margins. With leasing becoming an issue, it made more since to close than to fight both and the competition.
