Looks like BR is getting another beer festival. Seems like a good idea, just hope the brews they're serving aren't a bunch of typical ones you can get at bars around the city on the regular (but my hopes aren't too high).

Set for midday Saturday Oct. 10--LSU @ South Carolina but game time is not yet set. Will be bad news for the event if it's a 2:30 kickoff.

quote:

A new event planned for October in downtown Baton Rouge promises festivalgoers to opportunity to sample beers from around the country and the world.

The Cap City Beer Fest, also featuring music and gourmet food, will include more than 100 special beers, as well as a chance for beer-lovers to mingle with brewmasters. The event is set for Saturday, Oct. 10, in the Town Square, North Boulevard and Third Street, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Tickets, $40 in advance and $50 the day of the festival, allows the ticket-holder to sample any beer and come with a commemorative sampling mug. Advance tickets are available at CapCityBeerFest.org.

Word on the street is that the homebrewers will not be there in mass though. Too much going on for Brasseurs a la Maison (fact) and Red Stick (at least I assume), unsure about Bicycle. It is unfortunate that they planned it a week after Brew at the Zoo and shortly after NOLA on Tap, events that many guys fully commit to early on.

Yeah, Redstick wont be there either.

There are WAY too many events asking for free beer to accommodate everyone. I think we had 5 or 6 events in September/October ask for donations.

Downtown bar owners could come right behind it and set up a block party for the game. Grab a stage and large screen and sound system, and block 3rd St. entirely.

That would be money if it's a 7pm kickoff

This. The beer festivals that I have enjoyed the most are the ones that have one-offs and beers that aren't normally distributed here.

I also prefer the festivals where you get in for free and have to pay for the samples. I can spend as little or as much as I want. That puts pressure on the sponsors to bring in some good beers, as opposed to preselling the tickets and having people leave disappointed because they didn't get to try anything new or special.

Dallas has a Brewfest every month now. They are just promoter driven money making vehicles.

Honestly, I think my favorite events have been when a taproom hosts a tap takeover from a couple of breweries that either don't distribute to Portland, or bring beers that aren't distributed to Portland.

The better events here aren't ripoffs. I think that's probably because there are a lot of competing events, and most of the events are hosted by the breweries, themselves, rather than third parties. They use it more as PR, rather than a way to make money. If they don't provide good value, it can backfire on them.
