I almost forgot Benny's, they do not have food but they have the coldest beer in town. Great spot to get a beer without a lot of noise

Is yellow bird still open? We used to hit it up for breakfast sometimes back in college

Forgot about yellow bird. They have pretty good Migas and a nice Cuban style dinner.

So they are competing w/ the Crescent (next door) and Mariner's (across the street). Good luck...
-------------------------------------------------------------
The Crescent is an institution. A craft beer place isn't really going to compete head-to-head with them. Even next door. Friday night after work, people will keep going to the Crescent. Places come and go, but there will always be a Brocato, or their influence, at the Crescent.
If the food Blackened Brew becomes popular, Brady's and Mariner's will feel it before the Crescent.

Yea the crescent will always be there.

Here's a fun fact about the crescent, they will cater your wedding/event but won't charge per head, they only charge what is consumed. For my wedding we only spent $1k on booze for mid level liquor and beer/wine.

Another fun fact, they sell meat. Literally some of the best filets I have ever bought.

that reminded me of a funny story
when we first moved there we didnt know ANYBODY, so i asked someone about some good plsces to get a steak. he tells me "the best steak in town is at the crescent"

so my wife and i go there, looking to get the best steak in town, notice theres no tables or anything, and not really any indication of food service, but i see the steaks in the case. so i ask the bartender for some dinner menus...

hilarity (on his part) ensued

I've never bought a steak from them before, but it's obviously working for them.
I remember when they first started selling meat. I was thinking "WTF is this?" Meanwhile, Rickie and Dickie sold quality steaks and complementary bottles of wine (or vice versa) from their package liquor section. Many years later, they now have a reputation for quality steaks. I guess that just shows how much I don't know about running a business and adjusting to the market.
I didn't know about their catering/wedding reception policy, but it doesn't surprise me. Rickie is about the nicest guy you'd ever want to meet. He supports everything in town. (Early prediction: He'll be buying lunch/dinner from his "competitor" next door.)

In the mid eighties my girlfriend was in her cousin's wedding at Holy Ghost in Hammond. It was June, of course, and hot as hell. The church was packed and me and her brother had to stand outside at the entrance to the church.

It was hot as hell and we figured that we would have at least an hour before the end of the wedding so we headed to the Crescent to get out of the heat. Well, we started doing some snorkels and lost track of time.

By the time we got back to the church the wedding was over and there wasn't a car left in the parking lot. When we finally showed up to the reception, we got so much shite from those Eyetalian women.

Ended up at Brady's, forgot it was ash Wednesday so we had to seek seafood and Blackened Brew does not have a wide selection of seafood.

Also another fun fact about Hammond, Guy's Grocery has some really good steaks as well. They will cut however big or small you want and usually have prime or at least a very quality piece of choice. I know I have got prime filet from there a few times. If you catch them with some day old meat you can get a hell of a deal on steak in the meat cooler.

"Ruzil" Did you grow up in Hammond or go to school there in the mid 80s? That was during my time in Hammond, just curious.
