Actually, the lump for BGE and other Kamado makers is made by King Fire out of Belle, MO. Lump is lump. I buy bags of Frontier at SAMs for $9/20lb bag.

And no on Yetti.

The sams lump isn't bad, it's just not well graded

There are some huge pieces and a whole lot of crumbs

I bought the chargriller akorn Kamado grill for less than 300 just to dip my toes into the Kamado world and I haven't regretted it one bit

It's not the quality of a BGE but it's a fraction of the price of course

+1 on the akorn.
if you want to give kamado cooking a trial but dont want to spend big money - the akorn is a great buy

That's what I don't like. Huge pieces that you need a hammer or hatchet to break up and a bunch of crumbs. And it seems to cause more sparks also

The guy that we bought it from told us the xl egg wasn't as efficient as the reg size one fwiw. Dunno if that's true or not for the one u suggest

The XL egg is shallower so it cooks a little different than the large. Not a big deal, just have to learn it.

Now...
1) Yes they are worth the money
2) Yes you can cook other things besides BBQ.
3) I like that they can get as high as 650/700 and hold...or low and slow and hold.
4) No yeti here.

IMO Kamado Joe > Big Green Egg

Primo > others due to the oval shape of the grill

...and do yourself a favor and get a good temperature control system

I have peach, pecan, oak, apple, cherry, orange, hickory chunk wood. Never go with chips.

Started with Akorn to Kamado Joe. Have both on patio. Next dream purchase is Primo XL or Big Kamado Joe.

You guys saying 650-700 might be underachieving

I was cooking steaks the other night and my infrared which goes up to 800 degrees said error when I shot the grates

The hair on my arms said it was around 900

Use regular charcoal and lighter fluid, it works well for me I don't see what all the fuss is about. All the bs aside I like mine the little that I use it

First time I did it was by accident

I put the vents wide open to burn off the charcoal that was left

Came out to check on it and the thermometer was buried

You NEVER USE fluid and charcoal in Kamados. The fluid will seep in the ceramic and will crack. Always use starters and lump.

I have a large BGE and my buddy has the Kamado Joe. One thing to consider is the accessories available for the BGE. The aftermarket raised grills and racks are made and sized for the BGE. Many of these accessories won't fit the Kamado. I use the racks all the time to cook for big groups.

I think it's an easy way to do a chore where the fun and labor play into how good the end product is supposed to be.
