Is the term "Vittles" a general term for food or does it refer to a specific dish? Everyone I ask gives me different answer.

vittles is a dish of possum and greens...preferably with cornbread on the side

That was a general term for standard meals. Jethro only got excited when she said she was cooking up some possum.

"Vittles" is the pronounciation for victuals, which is a general term for food.

quote:

Middle English: from Old French vitaille, from late Latin victualia, neuter plural of Latin victualis, from victus ‘food’; related to vivere ‘to live.’ The pronunciation still represents the early spelling vittel ; later spelling has been influenced by the Latin form.

I recently re-watched the first 2 episodes of The Beverly Hillbillies. Good stuff.

The oil was not discovered as shown in the opening credits. A young stranger asked if he could do some wildcatting down by Jed's slough, and Granny said he could because she'd be happy to be rid of the critters. Jed said the joke was on the young man, though, because the slough was full of oil.

The stranger, who was with an oil company, later told Jed he would like to pump the oil out of his slough. Jed said he would too, but he couldn't afford to.

Vittles is food, in general. It includes possum belly, grits, smoked crawdads, etc.

Pumping that oil got Jed a cement pond.

And I'm sure Jethro got Miss Hathaway and she would be a legit WYHI thread.

The more obscure term was not 'vittles' but 'epizooti'. It was used as an excuse to drink booze to cure the disease.

Epizooti is a country term for a sickness passed from an animal to a human.

Pretty sure Granny referred to booze as her "roomatiz medicine".

There's a restaurant in Tennessee that you can order vittles. It's just a sample of everything.
