I feel like getting uppity about hot dog preparation is stretching things.
Do I indulge in a couple dogs as a guilty pleasure from time to time? Oh yeah. But I feel like there's a point where you just gotta accept them for what they are -- low brow.
Outside of grilling them, it's all gonna be about the same.

I cook them in a skillet on medium high heat sometimes.
With a little butter.

Ever had a Varsity Dog in Atlanta? Boiled. Ever had a Lumms? Boiled in beer. I know many people that boil hot dogs especially in the South. This is not something new nor is it not socially acceptable.

why eat hot dogs? arent they disgusting?
Posted on 6/18/14 at 9:38 pm to Martini
I'd go with boiling also. I mean they're already cooked, you're really just trying to heat them up somehow. Boiling makes em nice and juicy. Other option is microwave

Yep boiled is the way to do it. Or a ripper (deep fried). Minced white onion, mustard, no bean chili, super soft steamed bun

I don't understand the steamed bun though. Never tried that before.

Soft bun is where it's at
Best hot dog in the world is in Reykjavik. Followed closely by the varsity.

They don't get oily when boiled and they plump up which I can't seem to get them to do on the grill.
I'll eat a grilled, sautéed, split in half, chili dog from Country Club Texaco. I mean I'm not hot dog snob although I buy Nathan's, Hebrew or Boars Head. The big bison from Whole Foods are good. But a boiled juicy jumbo is hard to beat.
But truth be known I believe a fresh, steamed bun is more important. A hard, stale or toasted bun I won't touch no matter what dog you put in it.

Skillet. Sufficiently heated on the inside, with a crispy outside and a good juicy snap when you bite into it. Serve with mustard, that red sauce with onions that they have in NYC (saberatts makes a jarred version), and relish.
For the people who split the dogs open, do you really like it that dry?

Mine aren't dry when I split and cook them in high heat. They're good and caramelized and have that juicy snap to which you refer.

I'll boil or butterfly them and put them in a skillet
I have deep fried them a handful if times and they were great

I've never deep fried them, but I may try that. Don't eat them often, but I sure enjoy them when I do.

Couldn't agree more. Whoever told me about putting the bag of buns in the microwave for a few seconds thank you
I'll never heat up a hot dog bun another way

Ditto for me, too. You can put a 50-cent-a-pack hot dog on a fresh, soft bun and it will be great!

I normally toast the bun in the oven and I've honestly never thought about it steamed. Not sure why but it has just never crossed my mind. Now that I think about it I do believe I would enjoy it that way much better. Will give it a try next time.
I'm surprised hot dogs are acceptable food on the F&D board. Sometimes you just gotta slum it up a little and eat stuff like that.

I guess I'm an odd person in the thread since I prefer the bun toasted. I just don't love soft bread on sandwiches except for a nice summer tomato sandwich with white bread. I like the hot dog and the bun to have crunch, though I will eat one the other way.

If no chilli, then I like my bun steamed.
If chilli is available, toast up the bun, hot dog, chilli, grated onion and cheese into the broiler. Grab a fork and get fat & happy
