quote:Subjective term obviously, but a dive to me has generally been associated w/ dingy, old(classics), and cheap.
I always thought a dive was some place you could walk into wearing shorts and a t-shirt and get a seat, no reservations.

quote:Chimes has large windows letting light in, flat screens all over the walls, and well over 100k in wood work alone. That aint a dive.
Then Chimes is a dive

So basically you mean shitty restaurants... Well BR is the right place to find those.
I was always under the impression that a dive bar us a neighboorhood bar with some history in which case Chimes would fit the bill

Well, the original Chimes could be a dive. That was shitty and dingy...with some history.
How long does something have to be open before it has history?
All the cash you're speaking of in wood work is in the newer part of the bar.
Cypress.
ETA: ahh, sorry...not you Doc.

quote:blah blah. Not getting in to this. Nobody would call Chimes a dive. They would call it a good local spot.

quote:Oh yeah...when it was all smoking and before the restorations Bathrooms were dirty, place stunk, and the servers were hired from the hippy dwellings right behind the restaurant(and still are) hell I smoked on and off in college and I still couldn't go there to eat. But sure as hell put down some pints.
Well, the original Chimes could be a dive

I think The Chimes is a good locals spot.. didn't think of Louie's.. Louie's is a good dive

A local casual spot is a dive. It has nothing to do with history or any of that shite. Chimes is a dive.

Atcha Bakery at the North gates on Nicholson. Cheap Lebanese food in a not-so-nice setting.

quote:Like I said, subjective. "Dive bar" has a negative connotation associated with it by most people, and is associated w/ low rent types, like the NELA folk on here.
A local casual spot is a dive.
This is why I don't consider Chimes a "dive". It's not low rent and has a very diverse clientele.

I can walk into Chimes in flip flops, jorts, and a wife beater and get a burger. I think it's a dive.
Of those things, I only own flip flops. So technically, I couldn't.

Regardless of what is actually a "dive", we gave the best answers to the OP.
BTW, I dominate Raouls on Florida at least once or twice a month.

Seriously thinking about making some homemade jorts this summer. I'd get a good laugh every time I looked in mirror. I think it would be worth it.
No belt(or braided), jorts, flip flop and socks, and a wife beater. Don't think I could take me seriously.

There are about 10 restaurants in BR that you couldn't say that about.
