Who peed in your Mississippi Pot Roast?

Look, I get the "set it and forget it" convenience, but they produce an inferior product to traditional methods.

The pot roast that you mentioned is always going to be better cooked in the oven.

But the crock pot definitely has its place, especially for people that can’t really cook
I can’t really imagine any one being appreciably better than another

If I was buying one today, I'd get a multi-function model that pressure cooks and does other things just to save kitchen space.

But I'm not. We have two, one at each house. One is relatively new, the other is from the 70s. Both work fine and there's no difference in the results.

I use my crock pot as a chafing dish, and it works great for that.

Garage sales, Goodwill, and estate sales are an excellent place to buy a crockpot if you want one. They last a long time and if the lid and crock are ok, it will be a good buy at those locations. Remember, for most of us, our crock pot will spend a good bit of its life in a cabinet and only comes out 10 or twelve times a year (mostly less than that) so looks and brand are just not that important. If you like the way it looks, remember, no one ever walks into a kitchen and says, "What a wonderful/pretty crock pot you have there."

We were at an estate sale a few weeks back that had a great looking larger crock pot (white with colorful chickens on the side) for 5 dollars. Unchipped lid and squeaky-clean crock. Would have purchased it if we didn't already own one. Most estate and garage sales folks will let you plug it in and if it heats up within a few minutes and is not beat to hell, it will be a great buy, regardless of brand.

Yep. And it’s essentially the same method. I never use the crock pot anymore and at one time I cooked a lot of stuff in my crockpot.

I’d recommend one that has a regulator knob for the settings and not digital.

We had a digital one, the power blinked briefly at the house and it didn’t turn back on. Got home to a raw, room temp roast.

I agree. But not THAT much better. In the summer and in general maybe having the oven on for 8 hours eats a lot of electricity and heats up the kitchen unnecessarily.

That said I don’t have one or use one. That cupboard space is for my Instapot that can be a crockpot, but never is because I can use it to cook the same roast in two hours.

But the crockpot doesn't heat up your kitchen when it's 105 degrees outside.
