Buying lump crabmeat can be a mixed bag, depending upon what brand you can find. Sometimes I've gotten good containers with very few shells to have to pick through, other times, I have bought containers with so much shell that it was almost not worth it.

Anyone know a reliable brand with limited amount of shell and good quality?

Blue crab is still hand picked, so amount of shell will vary widely from container to container, even within the same brand. Just depends on the competence of the pickers on any given day. I try to buy from pickers in my area, esp those I know buying direct from local crabbers. Kourtneys, Punchs, etc.

Punchs

Good start but I don't think they pick their own meat. I could be wrong.

Ponchatrain Brand out of Slidell and Chez Francois in Lafayette but they don't mass market.

I agree, when possible I buy jumbo lump, a lot more expensive but no shells

I've been in Punchs picking room. I don't know if they pick 100% of what goes into their products sold through Rouses, but there is definitely a picking operation at the Lockport location.

I didn't realize that. They do make some good stuffed crabs.

Yeah, nobody wants shell in their crab meat, but the truth is that if you meticulously pick through and remove all of the shell, you have to break it up and won't be left with jumbo lump. It's sort of like that gristle in a rib eye. You just have to deal with it sometimes. Agreed that sometimes there's an inexcusable amount of shell.
