Apparently avocado toast is a big thing these days. I have never had it and only started to hear of it recently. Now I seem to see stuff about it everywhere. How do you prepare yours? Have you had it at restaurants? If so how was it prepared? TIA

Lemon, salt, and red pepper flakes. Sometimes a few drops of Sriracha.
ETA: Never ordered it in a restaurant. I think the only place I've ever even seen it on a menu was Shaya.

What type of bread do you normally use? We do not eat a lot of bread but when we do it is usually Ezekial bread.

Some of the crunchy granola places in Nola have avocado toast on the menu. I just don't want to spend $12 for it when I can make it at home cheaper. Shaya is the exception because it's not just an avocado on toast/has other components.

I eat this about once a week, when avocados are cheap. My favorite base is a thin slice of miche (sourdough part whole grain traditional French style loaf), usually from Breads on Oak. Very lightly toasted, generously smeared with smashed avocado, sprinkled with sea salt, a squeeze of lime or sprinkle of cider vinegar, and cracked black pepper. It's a pointless endeavor unless you have delicious bread and a very ripe avocado. To me, the base bread needs to be lean (i.e., not brioche or challah or squishy sandwich loaf) and distinctly flavorful....like a seedy multigrain.

I do it all the time for breakfast or light lunch

lime juice, cumin, garlic powder, red pepper or cayenne and s&p.

I am seeing that a lot of people like to top with a soft boiled egg. This just sounds heavenly. Also seeing recipes that top the bread with some type of aioli before adding the avocado.

I have done a fried egg on top and its money. A kind of avocado egg salad sounds good too.

I start with an eggy in the basket (pretty simple if you haven't heard of it) and add mashed avocado; a dash of olive oil, coarse salt and pepper. Fantastic stuff.

I do mine on Ezekial bread, mash the avocado with lime, salt and garlic powder. Top it with scrambled egg and chipotle tabasco.

Damn, this sounds good. I'd maybe spray a little olive oil on top but it probably doesn't even need it, as avocados are naturally pretty oily.

I recently added some goat cheese to my avocado toast and it was delicious.

Uh, yes please.

I haven't had it on toast but I've had it on a toasted English Muffin like that. It was pretty good too.

I make a sandwich with avocado slices, pepperoni, and swiss cheese, or whatever cheese I have on hand. Then grill it like a grilled cheese sandwich. Easy and delicious.

My girlfriend had the same reaction when I made it. Needless to say I've been poaching eggs with a vengeance since then.

Try this one by Rick Bayless:

Roasted Tomatillo Guacamole with Crunchy Chicharrón - VIDEO

Avocados, tomatillo salsa, cilantro, salt, chopped pork skins, Mexican hot sauce, and shredded queso.

Serve with tortillas or spread on your favorite toasted bread.
