We enjoyed our stop at Louie Mueller’s during a pre-COVID road trip. The antiques emporium (KINCL House of Antiques) next door was a nice bonus. Taylor seems like a very cool small town, based on our brief visit.

I will always recommend Leroy & Lewis

It's really good, we almost stopped there for lunch today but didn't have time to stop. It may not scratch the classic central TX bbq itch. L&L is more cutting edge, pushing the envelope in a tasty way.

Leroy and Lewis is a great experience if the weather is nice. But keep in mind, they only do brisket and their bacon rib on certain days so be sure to look it up before going.

Even so, their burger, beef cheeks and sausage are still worth the trip.

Best Austin BBQ with out hours of wait is to drive/fly to Charleston SC and eat at Lewis BBQ...better city and lots of good food without all the traffic...

Pro tip, order takeout online and then go eat it in the beer garden. You’re not supposed to do it but it works.

Lewis is fantastic.

What’s the verdict on L&L and how was the fest?

If you get to Terry Black's around the time they open you can be in, out, and sat within like 10 minutes

But I like it. The best SL is not in Round Rock; it’s in Driftwood, the original. Be prepared to wait. I like the experience.

Agreed. Salt Lick remains a top 5 of mine because of the Q coupled with the experience, but only at the Driftwood location.

Update from my trip. I took day off from work and drove with my best man to Lockhart and tried Blacks, Smitty and Kreuz BBQ:

We got the Beef Rib and Brisket at Black's. The Beef rib was amazing. Brisket was not good at all.

We stopped at Smitty's and we really enjoyed Smitty's. The huge old style fire room. The pit masters stand in that room with coal burning all the time. It was hot like I'm going to get smoked. We loved their Brisket. The best of all places.

We were pretty full since we had some beers at Smitty's. Smitty's is cash only.

We stopped by Kruez for Brisket to sample. It was not that bad

The 30 min drive was well worth it. Zero wait times. If we have to do it again. We will do the same but skip the Brisket at Blacks

It's good that you had a chance to stop at Smitty's. It's easily my favorite brisket and I don't mind the drive if I am in San Antonio or Austin.

Black's is known for their Beef Ribs. And Kreuz is known for their smoked sausage.

I’ve been to blacks once and I also thought their brisket was nothing special. Smittys is my favorite of the 3 as well. I like the atmosphere there best.

I didn’t end up getting anything from them. Posted pictures of my fox in my thread about the BBQ at the festival. Truth brisket was best.

Festival was fun but they sell way too many tickets, they need to move to grant park. And now it’s become a thing with the kids, so the number of mid teens kids getting served and drunk was a bit much.

Isn’t Blacks and Terry Blacks two different places completely?

Yep. Blacks is the original in Lockhart. Terry Blacks is some younger guys from the Black family that had a legal battle with the Original and so named their place Terry Blacks rather than Blacks Austin. These family squabbles happen a lot in the Texas barbecue world.

Last time I was there I hit Terry Black’s for lunch. The line was not long so virtually no wait. Everything looked amazing. I am not sure what was going through my mind, but I ordered way too much food. Everything was amazing and I got so uncomfortably full. Warning to everyone.
The next night I came home drunk and ate the leftovers cold. shite is too good

This was my experience on Saturday. Went there around 2:00. Place was slammed but I lucked into a great parking spot and walked in. I'd never been there before so wanted to do like a "3 meat plate" deal to try some things.

Got beans and slaw. Then ordered meats by the slice. 2 pieces of brisket, 2 slices of turkey, and 2 pork ribs. I was volunteering at a convention and hadn't eaten since 7:00 AM so I was starving.

My bill... $62. Holy crap, but I'm there for the experience.

The food? Sublime. Worth that price all day, every day.

But I ordered enough for two people easily and paid for it financially

Ate what I could and took the rest with me. A lesson learned but don't go there hungry and also realize a "slice" of brisket won't be some thin sliced piece you get at a place in Louisiana.

I will admit...bbq prices have gotten way out of control. I went to get a breakfast taco at Rudy's, and had a novel idea of just ordering a slice of fatty brisket (from the point) to put in an egg taco, instead of getting chopped brisket. 1 damn slice was almost $6! It was thick, but damn!

And yeah, it was a very good breakfast taco done that way. Highly recommend doing that if you are near a Rudy's. Just ask for a think slice of fatty, along with whatever else you want in your taco.
