I had quite a fatty weekend, with a trip to Johnny Sanchez, Martinique Bistro, Peche, and The Franklin.

I'm not much for photos in public, so I took barely any photos, but I was so impressed with The Franklin that I had to tell y'all about it. I never really heard of the place, and I don't understand why. Seems like the type of joint that would get a lot of love here.

I snapped some shots of the menu for y'all. I don't know if they even have a website (haven't checked).

Apologies for the darkness. The atmosphere is absolutely fantastic. Very dark, but "hip". Weird artwork, good music, pretty bar, dark furniture.

So, here is the cocktail menu.

I can't remember 100%, but I think we ordered Kentucky Rifleman, GNT Peel, Word, and Isabelle.
Isabelle was INSANELY smoky and hard to drink, but the Word was awesome. I loved it. Kentucky Rifleman was crazy-weird.

The food menu is really interesting. Everything looked good, so it was a near argument when it came to deciding what to order. As Yeezy said to me, if you can't find something that sounds appealing on this menu, there is something wrong with you.

So we decided to start with the tuna tartare. This was weird, and I don't know that I really loved it. But it was interesting. The olive puree was very potent, so if you're an olive lover, you'd probably love it.
This wouldn't have been the small plate I'd have chosen, so that's probably why I'm biased. I don't love watermelon.

Next was the grilled oysters. The poached sounded extremely interesting (can't say I've had a poached oyster), but the waitress said the grilled were better without even hesitating.

Didn't snap a photo of them. Oysters are oysters anyway. Were they the best grilled oysters I've ever had? No. But they were good. Definitely heavier on the grill taste than butter/parm taste. If you don't like them overly rich with butter, these are the ones to get.

Finally, the star of the show, we ordered the Grilled Sweetbreads and Braised Oxtails.

I HAAAAAAATE that I didn't have a big appetite last night because this was one of the best dishes ever. The sweetbreads were massive, and they were sitting on top of the braised oxtails, so they soaked up the rich sauce from there. It was all atop bread, which was perfect.

Shitty photo :( I forgot I even wanted to take a photo until we began eating, and it was so dark in there.

So yeah. Place was super cool. I'd love to go back because there was a lot that looked good; I just don't have the stomach room. Especially after eating our weight in food at Peche for lunch.

Oh, I would say you blew Arse's weekend out of the water!

Only question is, where was the invite?

Place had the quietest opening of all time. Still doesn't have a website. I've not been but am dying to try it.
Sweetbread and Oxtail dish sounds like it was created in my dreams!

Thanks for the review!

I will say.. the other two starters were good, but not outstanding. I hate when a menu looks amazing, and the execution is poor, but the sweetbreads/oxtails were so good that everything else could have been crap.

I think the atmosphere and good cocktails definitely affected my judgment of the first two dishes. I definitely would go back and try other things.

Of course, JS's atmosphere couldn't make up for the poor meal I had there, so

Did ya'll split the sweetbread dish? It looks gigantic.

Most of the entrees seem like heavy dishes?

The prices are much lower than I expected. I need to check this place.

Yes, and still had leftovers for another meal after splitting.

The entrees do all look to be quite heavy.

Yelpers seems to like it for the most part, although they all seem to warn that the avocado small plate is bland.

It's quite annoying to read, though, because people are so offended by "hipster atmosphere". There's one guy's comment on Yelp that I actually LOL'd reading because it was so ridiculous and a-hole.

Nah. People contribute to his thread all the time.

I don't really like starting threads, especially to review 1 restaurant. Odd because I like to read them.
