Went to Antoine's for the first time this weekend and had a very meh experience for a New Orleans restaurant. Had oysters Rockefeller and crab au gratin for an appetizer, pompano Pontchartrain and puffed potatoes for entree and baked Alaska for dessert. The only think I was halfway impressed with was the baked Alaska. The restaurant itself was cool with the mardi gras memorabilia, but the food was just okay and the service was below average, especially for a fancy, New Orleans joint. How is this place still around?

This is a pretty good first post.

It has been 3 years since I've gone there, and had the same experience as you.

Asked myself the same question then.

Because from mid-November until the last day of Carnival, a whole bunch of old (rapidly dwindling) monied types have luncheons and deb parties in one of the many rooms. The Hermes Bar keeps them afloat as well, plus they've owned the building for so long, I doubt they have a mortgage to pay (equal to value of building). Probably just a LOC they draw on in slow times and pay off in busy season

I feel exactly the same way. Its the very definition of "meh" to me. The only thing worth getting is the baked alaska. Unless you're 100 years old I can't see how you can like it. And the fact that it doesn't have valet in the damn FQ is inexcusable.

It serves it's place as being a good example of an old school N.O. eatery, but it would never make anyones top 20 list in N.O.

Only time I go is for the cheap lunch or drug rep meetings.

Would never go at dinner, way better options out there.

For your first post ever you dog a restaurant that has been around for more than a century plus. A kitchen can have a bad day with staffing on the line. Many years ago I worked four stations in the restaurant, three in the kitchen and as a busboy for number four. The kitchen looked like a WWI battlefield when it was done. The KM and I smoked a cigarette while looking at the devastation that we had to clean.

I've been trolling this board for awhile - its my go to when I'm looking for a restaurant review or somewhere new to try. Decided to take the plunge and contribute after my disappointing experience.

I've been once, and got the same exact items minus the oysters and came away feeling the same way. Baked alaska was the good part.

I've been twice in the last year. One was in one of their rooms. I know some people like stuff like that, but I don't like being separate from the main dining area and didn't like sitting there because I find it takes away from the experience and does not add to it. However, I went again in the last month or so and had a very good experience. Certainly, I think it falls pretty low on my list of restaurants in NOLA, but the service was excellent, the baked alaska was on point, and the oysters a la foche were great. I think it's overpriced and is fairly standard stuff, but I enjoyed it last time. But overall I can't disagree with anything stated in this thread.

I haven't been in about a year, but I found that some things are very good and some are just okay. In comparison, I find Arnaud's to be way ahead of the game on all fronts...food, service, atmosphere.
