Hey gang,

Hope you don't mind me posting this on the F/D Board instead of the OT to avoid the non-sense. Long story short. Me and my girlfriend are celebrating our 1 year anniversary with a 3 day trip to New Braunfels and Austin area. She's new to Texas, I've been in Houston 7 years. So she's never been thru Austin or San Antonio. Said she would much prefer a fun weekend trip than the usual fancy dinner, flowers, and jewelry. (a keeper)

Hotel already booked.
Country Inn & Suites, San Marcos, TX
August 6th - 8th.Thursday night thru Saturday night.

Schlitterbahn passes already paid and printed.
August 7th. Friday.

We are looking at driving from Houston to Austin mid day Thursday. So we'll be in Austin for the afternoon. Then going to our hotel in San Marcos for the night. Getting up at 7AM to head to Schlitterbahn to do Schlitterbahn all day. Then once dark, back to San Marcos to rest. And spending all day in Austin the next day.

I've got a couple of questions for the Central Texas natives or anyone who's been in the Austin area quite a bit. I've been to Austin a few times to party or to party on Lake Travis, so I don't know all that much about it.

- What are the absolute must see places in Austin?
- What are the musts places to eat in Austin or that area?
- Do you think it would be better if we rented bikes or mopeds to get around Austin for the day instead of worrying about traffic and parking?

Since I've already dropped $450 on the hotel and Schlitterbahn passes I kind of want to keep the food and drink bills to a minimum. But I still want her to have a blast on our anniversary and for her to experience the awesome town of Austin.

Any and all help appreciated. Thanks guys.

First....you should have skipped Schlitterbahn and just floated the Comal, Rockin R Tubes is what we use and you can float it as many times as you want.

When you do go there though, after a long day of floating, riding slides etc, go to Pat's Place and get an ice cold beer and either a burger or the cheese enchilladas.

Look to see who is playing at Gruene Hall.

San Marcos - go to The Root Cellar for Breakfast

Austin all kinds of stuff to do, I'd hit up Jester King Brewery if you are a beer fan.

I just got back, incredible city.

Jester King for sure.
Bangers on Rainey street.
Hopdoddy had awesome burgers.
Shady Grove.
Visit some wineries in Fredricksburg and get some authentic German food in Fredricksburg.

My wife and I just went to Austin last weekend and we had a blast but I don't really know if I can help you with the type of stuff you are looking for.

We ate at Odd Duck, Uchi, Torchy's Tacos, Gordoughs, La Condesa, and Salt Lick BBQ (which is about 20 minutes outside of Austin).

We went to Uchi for Sake Social hour and it was probably some of the best food I've ever tasted. Doors open at 5 and people start showing up around 4:15 to 4:30 to start waiting in line. They take about 10 things from their regular menu and provide tastings of each for a reduced rate. We ordered all 10 things and it was great.

Let your lady walk up an down South Congress and take a look at the shops.

Also went here and had the Brisket and the shrimp tacos and they were incredible.

Great ideas fellas.

South Congress and 6th Street are a must. What about Lady Bird Park, is it worth walking around?

And she's game for Jester King Brewery as well.

Definitely go to Jack Allen's Kitchen. It's a can't miss in my opinion. Really great.

that's a bit of a drive from San Marcos. I think there is decent German food down in New Braunfels, which would be much closer.

I'd certainly go to Gruene if I was in that area. Nice place to walk around, drink, and let the lady shop a little.

If you head towards Fredericksburg to do the 290 wine trail, Otto's in Fredericksburg is a must for dinner.

Last I heard the Guadalupe is running normal now for the first time in... Well I can't remember.

Do that instead of Comal or Schlitterbaun.
