Looking for something that can function as both a grill and a smoker (think BGE or something along those lines)

I won't use it often so I'm a bit hesitant to drop a lot of money on an Egg or a Primo. Definitely wouldn't need a very large one either. Usually if I'm cooking it's for at most about 10-12 people and usually just 1-4.

Any suggestions?

Char Griller Akorn. Got one for 280$ at Wal Mart. Gets the job done almost as good as a BGE

Vision Kamado from Sams. It's on sale for $499 I think, and fits all of the BGE accessories. I've had mine for several months and love it. Doing an overnight smoke on it tonight for some pork butts!

This! I smoke all the time on mine without the smokenator, just use two fire bricks to stack coals on one side and put meat on the opposite side. Works great.

The $150 (Premium) and $200 (MasterTouch) models of Weber 22" lack the table but take less space. I have both of those (recent upgrade) and a nice folding table that stashes away when not in use. I would spring for one of these at least. The cheaper models lack an ash-can and some other frills.

You can grill direct or indirect, and you can smoke low and slow. I smoked two racks of babybacks on mine recently. Lamb chops are going on the grill tonight. You can also add the rotisserie down the road.

I have a Smokey Mountain Cooker, but I use the kettle the most because of the convenience.

The akorn is awesome for the price. Can get up to 700+ degrees for steaks and down to 225 and below for smoking. Smoked a brisket last week and after I took it off, let it burn itself out. I was able to hold 225 steady for 30 hours on one load of lump charcoal.

Not saying it isn't as it does have some great reviews, but it will probably only last five or so years. I plan on having my Weber Performer for at least 20 years and the other Kamados will last a lifetime. Albeit the expensive kamados that last a lifetime will cost $1,000.

I've posted this a few times, but Weber kettle using this method to smoke; works like a dream:

I use the snake method (above) to smoke and it works like a charm. If I'm smoking wings I'll just run the snake vertically down the grill and load my wings up on each side of the line since it doesn't take as long to smoke the wings.
