I think that used to be a problem, but I think the biggest thing is that the market here might not be able to handle too many more.
We have made great strides in the past 5-10 years as a state, but it is still primarily a BMC state.

Louisiana really needs to get some good breweries. I was looking at a brewery map of the U.S. and it was pretty pathetic looking at Louisiana and only seeing 6 breweries. The Austin area has over twice as many breweries. Is it just more difficult to start a brewery in LA?
There far more demand for craft beer in other cities and other regions of the country. Especially posh, hip places like Austin.

As I understand it (and someone more in the know can gladly correct me, if I'm wrong), it's not so much that there are lots of legal hurdles to starting a brewery in Louisiana, as it is, our rather archaic (read, protective) distribution system that is in place, which you will need to crack in order to actually be able to sell it to the public.

Shilling distributors contributes quite a bit to legislative candidates, especially in the Lafayette/Acadiana area.
If I remember correctly, for breweries, you're allowed to only sell one case per month to an individual consumer.

I can think of 2 LA breweries' beer that I prefer over anything from Texas right now. Quantity does not always equal quality.
That being said, we do have a pathetic amount of breweries and that number needs to grow. It will just take time I guess.

So the new law passed last session only applies to liquors, then?
Sounds about right. That State Senator (Blade Morrish) only cared because of the new distillery opening in his district. To hell with helping other similar small businesses.
ETA: Yep. Only distilleries.

At the moment, breweries must sell all of their products at wholesale through a distributor. This means that when a brewing company begins it must have high sales out of the gate to stay afloat, Godley added. The ability to sell directly to the customer would make it easier for young breweries to market their products, develop their brands and build profit, he said.
Godley thinks one of the main reasons breweries haven't pushed for the change in legislation is the lack of a large micro-brewing industry in Louisiana.

There are different levels of beer geeks.
Right. There are cool beer enthusiast who like different beers and try to stay on the forefront all things beer. They view beer drinking as a hobby and don't judge others who are nit interested in their particular hobby. These guys are cool to hang out with.
Then there are whiney bitch beer figs. These cocksmokes actually think they are better than Norm down there at the end of the bar who's chugging back a 24 oz Bud. The fact that Norm has 3 PHD's, operates on human aortas, and has a net worth of a bus load of WBBFs doesn't matter. What matters is ZZZMOGGG!!!! he's drinking a BMC product!! What a fricking clueless retard!!! ZZZMFG!!
The Whiney BItch Beer fig may claim to be like the the cool beer enthusiast, but they are not. They should be avoided at all cost. Luckily they will recognize you by your normality and desperse themselves But in the event you find yourself surrounded by them wave a Coors light above your head. They will avoid you like you are the reincarnate of the bubonic plague.

Yes, but there are some other loopholes that the LA Craft Brewer's Guild is exploring. It'll probably be legal for breweries to sell a certain percentage straight to the public before too long.

the abita brew pub had a double IPA which I thought was perfect. hope this is similar. not a huge fan of jockamo..

I prefer Nola's Hopitoulas or Stone IPA over Jockamo. That being said, the hour of free Jockamo at the brewery tour was good enough to get me cut off and kicked out.

You have seriously had beer from every brewery in Texas? I live there and I haven't even come close. That being said, I wholeheartedly disagree. There are some meh breweries in TX, but most of what I have had is much better than anything to come out of LA. I've tried every beer from Abita, and the popular ones from Tin Roof and Bayou Teche. I've only had Nola Brown. Each of those has some stand out brews, but I haven't ever had anything that I'd choose over most of the texas brews that I've had. Just my opinion though.

Well there you go. Try more NOLA and and Parish and then get back me. The Canebrake is better than any session beer from TX and the Grand Reserve is as good or better than any big beer from TX IMO. NOLA's stout and hopitoulas are both great and also as good as any beer from TX (and I've had almost everything from the JK to Karbach to St. Arnold to Rahr, you name it).
ETA: I dont care for anything from TinRoof, Bayou Teche, or most of Abita's lineup. Not bashing them, but you cant list these average to below-average breweries as the best LA has to offer.

I've had some bad IPAs in my life, and Jockamo is near the top of that list if not in the pole position.
It is certainly bad, but worst IPA I've had is Indian Wells Amnesia IPA.
I will try their new one though and I hope it is worth a damn.

the sad thing is I would love to get Canebrake and Hopitoulas but I can't here in Lake Chas. I can get NOLA Blonde and an Amber I think, but not their better stuff. Is this because of my local beer store doesn't offer it or distributor doesn't get it? And I don't think Canebrake is offered anywhere west of Laffy. I was in Laffy about 3-4 mos ago and tried several places and couldn't get it.

Only if you don't count
Jester King Whiskey Barrel Rodeo
Jester King Boxers Revenge
Jester King Weasel Rodeo
Real Ale Kraken
Live Oak Old Tree Hugger
St Arnold Bishops Barrel
St Arnold Pumpkinator
Those are just the ones off the top of my head I'm sure a few TX guys could name more. I'm all for being a homer, but Grande Reserve is average at best. Parish has potential, but they need to put out more than one beer before I start ranking them against some of the TX breweries.

But isn't it only like 10%? It's a start, but a brewery should be able to sell everything themselves. I know I'm preaching to the choir.
