As you guys may remember, I use Living Cookbook software to store and organize my recipes. I have used the software to publish the last few versions of this board's recipe collection. I had a database of over 10,000 recipes.

Well, apparently the company went out of business and now the software won't work because the license can't be verified to open it.

Unless something develops, like a hack to allow the software to work, there will be no updates to the recipe collection from me.

I am pissed that recipes that I have collected for many years are now lost to me. How would you react?

I would be pissed. Post this on reddit to see if someone can hack it open for you. Did you not have any backups? After Katrina, my family scanned a lot and we slowly started typing them up in Microsoft Word.

I have regular backups, but the software won't open. Apparently every time you open the software it has to contact the website to verify your license.

You know, if they knew they were going under they should have cracked open the software so their loyal customers didn't get screwed.

I have no idea what the files are, but is there a way to open in notepad or something? It might have some extra lines in there, but it could have the recipe text.

Hmmm .. I wonder what type of database this is. I may be able to extract the data from it.

This appears to be their info btw:

If the data files might very well be in a format that is readable by other programs such as Access, Excel, Word. I have deciphered lost files and been able to recover data, it's not a sure thing, but is frequently doable.

I'll be glad to take a look at the data and see if there is anything I can do to help.

I found this conversion tool online. Maybe you can convert your Living Cookbook files to something useable.

it might be worth it to find someone on the tech board that could crack the program. I dont know coding enough to do it.

Thanks for the suggestions everybody. The file format for the working database is unknown to me. It can be exported in fdx or fdxz formats (among others), but if I can't open the program, I can't export to those formats. I have backup files that are proprietary to the program. They are lcb files.

I'm pretty sure I'll be able to access the recipes eventually, but it's going to be unwieldy.
