I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. I had many a Pancho's and Pedro's Taco in my 9 years in Baton Rouge. Better than Taco Bell, maybe, but not as good as Taco Tico.

FWIW, there were 6 locations in the NOLA area, all owned by the same guy that owns it now. Slidell, Chalmette, Gretna, Kenner, UNO and Metairie. When he started Taco Tico here, the Veterans location was a hamburger shack.

Here's a link to the older thread about this. Good info in there.

May check it out. The tacos when they briefly re-opened were terrible though, I will admit.

It was back in the 70s and 80s, not far from the Brass Rail on Highland.

I made the old version of that guy's recipe and it was very close. The oatmeal made all the difference. You could smell it and tell it was going to be close to the original.

He made some changes in the video version, most notably the textured vegetable protein, but that isn't going to really change the taste, only the texture. I've tried TVP - It's the same texture as ground beef, but will little flavor.

I wouldn't change the oatmeal, cumin or chili powder amounts.

You just reminded me of something funny from my youth. There used to be a Taco Tico right next to a Taco Bell on Williams Blvd in KennaBrah.

Taco Tico was running a radio special of 3 tacos for .49 cents. To get the deal, you had to write 3 tacos for .49 cents on a piece of paper and hand it to the person taking your order.

Well, we walked into Taco Bell by mistake and my cousin handed them the paper without speaking. The poor girl working the counter thought he was a mute.

We left and went next door and redeemed our home made coupon.

The hipster transplants here just don't understand that. They come down from their armpit villages move into the 504 and think they are some type of food experts. Is it the best tacos ever ? No but it's the best 39 & 59 cent tacos ever. 4 generations of tigerwises have enjoyed TT. The same can be said about Buds.

speak it brother

I grew up near Lafreniere Park in the 70's and 80's. Would save the nickels from returning glass Coke bottles to Schweggman's and use the funds to buy tacos at TT . Those were the days

when I first read the topic, I immediately thought Tiffin Inn not sure of the longevity but I can remember eating at TI waaay back in the early 80's . The day Tiffin Inn closes I'm gonna be seriously bummed out

after then reading the entire post, I remember StadRat telling us a few months ago about the lease problem

eventhough the food was OK, I'll always remember TacoTico on Vets

46 years of tacos is a lot of tacos and history. lot of metairie got their first taste of mexican food there.

I got my first taco there. I remember the local kids show in New Orleans serving the kids Taco Tico tacos and they had to teach them the correct way to eat them - "just like a hot dog".
