Observation: almost all of them live in trailers, they could just pull them away.
Weld pontoons on either side and tie the trailer to a couple of trees.

Factual basis for this statement? I'm sorry but you cannot just generally 'observe' that poor white people are less likely to get food stamps, medicare/medicaid and other government assistance JUST because they live in a rural area as opposed to a metropolitan one. I know, I grew up in the country.
It's interesting how many of the people 'interviewed' in this article are asking for 'help.' Consider what they mean-- GOVERNMENT MONEY. And to be honest, anywhere that floods, people would likely be saying the same thing. Fewer people out there, fewer hands reached out for government help after the flood.

Past generations of cajuns have moved along with the rivers that they have lived by. It's easier for a few thousand cajuns to up and move if the river floods and relocate by the river than to move a few hundred thousand city dwellers & company's(BR & NO) that have no river. This was a major factor in the building of the spillway not to help save these towns from the next major flood.
So, if it's easier for the Cajuns to move, and they've done it for generations, what's the damn problem with opening the spillway and letting them, you know, move?

My condolences. I hope you've moved your irreplaceable stuff to higher ground. (Actually, I hope you've evacuated entirely, but I respect the decision to stay if they're only projecting a few feet.)
To me the problem with the media sensationalizing this issue is that it isn't like I'm unconcerned/unsympathetic to the people who are faced with flooding, and I don't think they should imply that everyone who lives in BR and NO are laughing our assess off that the Cajuns are getting wet.

This Morganza Spillway debate is a classic case in the course of Ethics. Utilitarian views state that you take an action that will be the most beneficial to the greatest good. Obviously, if Baton Rouge and New Orleans flood, the whole economic system of Louisiana collapses. Saving 2 million people is greater than 25,000. If the state fails , then what will the unemployment look like ? What will these refrugees living in the Basin do anyway ? Decisions are not being made to be basis towards Democrats or Republicans. The tough decisions are being made
to save the structure of Louisiana.
Most of the time, networks like MSNBC want to stir up controversy and start fights and arguments. They get off to making people look like victims. Forget these people. They usually make more money in one year than these basin farmers make in 5 or 8 years. They are not your friends. The media has an agenda. The best decisions are being made for the good.

This article infuriated me too. Funny how they don't mention until the end that if Baton Rouge and New Orleans happened to flood, refineries that produce 12% of the nation's gas will be flooded too, oh and a nuclear power plant
You can't reason with liberal media news outlets...completly out of touch assholes trying to stir up shite..."they wouldn't see the truth if it came and bit them on the arse"...

MSNBC types are gonna get their victim angle, no matter what.
Opening the Morganza they are going to focus on those victims.
Morganza stays closed they go to the poor flood victims in New Orleans.
These assholes will get their angle either way.

quote:Of course you can. I think your wife's pawpaw probably would not sell it nor make it available to people because he wouldn't make any money on it. That's generally the only reason why insurance companies won't sell it and will lie to you and tell you you can't get it. It's a big fricking lie because you CAN buy it if you want it.
cant buy flood insurance in butte la rose, my wifes pawpaw has a camp there and he worked in the insurance industry for years.
Tell your wife's pawpaw he's a dipshit for lying to everyone.

Meh, there's more poor people in north BR than the entire basin
Posted on 5/16/11 at 7:05 pm to colorchangintiger
I think you would have a problem getting flood insurance after the 3rd occurrence. They would probably require you to put your trailer up on pilings.
Still wouldn't be cheap I bet.

Ah. Well y'all should be okay over there, no? We're in the back of Richland Row off 311...we'll probably get some water, but shouldn't have any in our house.

Can we get an "Obama hates white people" conspiracy going?
Unlike Bush, he actually is approving the flooding of thousands of homes.

Same here. I live on Talbot Drive right past Savanne. I won't have any trouble as I am at the front but the people in the back along with South Ellendale Estates might. My biggest impact will be travel as I will be limited to hwy 311. Doesn't Mulberry have a low spot in the middle that always floods for hard rain?

I live in New Orleans. If the people in the Morganza wanna talk about how is not fair they are getting flooded and I'm not - that's fine with me. They're the ones getting flooded. They can say whatever the frick they want as far as I'm concerned, I won't take offense or in anyway think negative about them for it. I'd be saying the same sorts of things if roles were reversed.

Let me guess. You assume this because they are white?
Quit being ignorant.

How come there are no subdivisions or houses between Airline and I-10 in the Bonnet Carre?
Oh yeh because it is a spillway!
